Know a (Softball) Gamecock: Kierstyn White

Sophomore pitcher Kierstyn White is today's Know a Gamecock feature. During her high school career at Irmo, she compiled 1,287 strikeouts with a 0.47 ERA during her high school career and was named the region's AAAA Player of the Year in her senior season. In her freshman season at South Carolina, White was 9-4 with a 2.69 ERA and 45 strikeouts. She is planning to major in civil engineering.

What is your greatest achievement?

Probably getting a win against Alabama in the series last year.

Do you have a personal motto?

Just give 110% all the time because it will do nothing but make you better.

Who are three people you would like to meet or hang out with?

Brad Paisley, Jennie Finch, and I'll go with Patrick Dempsey.

What is your most treasured possession?

Probably my blanket. My sister made it for me when I was in high school, and I take it everywhere I go.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Outback. Definitely. [Editor: What do you get there?] I get the Outback Special every time I go. I never have anything different.

What are the last three songs you listened to?

"Tick Tock" was one of them. "Favorite Girl" by Justin Bieber, and "White Liar" by Miranda Lambert.

Know a (Softball) Gamecock: Audrey Broyles

Today's Know a Gamecock features Gamecock softballer Audrey Broyles. A sophomore pitcher from Pembroke Pines, Florida, Broyles is a right-hander who started 30 games for South Carolina in 2009. She finished her debut season with a 10-12 record, a 2.67 ERA and struck out 130 batters in 144 innings of work. She tossed all nine complete games for the Gamecock staff in 2009.

What is a talent or power you would like to have?

I think it would be really cool if I had super sonic speed and be able to just run...as fast as a car.

What is your most treasured possession?

I would have to go with my iPod because I always use it at the gym to get me pumped while I'm working out and just when I need to relax I listen to some nice slow tunes.

Who are your three favorite artists or bands?

I love Carrie Underwood, The All-American Rejects, and Taylor Swift

What is your dream job?

That's a tough question because I have no idea what I want to do, but I think it would be really cool to work somewhere tropical and exotic. I'm in the hotel, restaurant, tourism, management business, so I think just somewhere like paradise, like Hawaii or something like that...managing or something along those lines would be cool.

What is one place you want to visit before you die?

I would love to visit Australia. I think the animals are so unique and different from what we have over here, so it would be cool to see that. It just seems really beautiful.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Mellow Mushroom is awesome. [Editor: What do you get there?] I just get pepperoni pizza; it's amazing.


Know a Gamecock: Bobby Haney

Today's Know a Gamecock features South Carolina shortstop Bobby Haney. A senior from Smithtown, NY, Haney transferred to Carolina from Manatee Community College in Florida. He played in 63 games in 2009, batting .291 with 4 HR and 30 RBI and picking up second team All-SEC honors. Haney also had a .955 fielding percentage, earning him a spot on the SEC's All-Defensive team.

Who is your favorite MLB player?

Derek Jeter. He's a winner. He's calm under pressure and he plays for the Yankees.



Favorite MLB team?

The Yankees.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

Probably playing shortstop at Carolina after great names like Reese Havens, Brian Roberts and Adam Everett.

What is your greatest fear?

The dark.

If you were going to sing karaoke, what song would you pick?

Barry White - Can't get enough of your love

Name three people dead or alive you'd like to meet.

50 Cent, Brad Pitt and Vanessa Minnillo.

What is a talent you'd most like to have?

That I could absolutely fly around the basepaths.

My glove - I always keep my glove near me.

Any girl that Derek Jeter has gone out with.

I'll wear the same wristband if i had a good game wearing it. But I'll change it out if it gets too dirty.


Know a Gamecock: Ieasia Walker

Women's basketball freshman Ieasia Walker comes to Columbia from Amityville, NY. A 5'8 guard, Walker averages 4.5 points per game for the Gamecocks and has played in all 23 games this season.

What is your greatest achievement so far?

Winning two national championships at the AAU level.

What is your greatest fear?

Getting injured.

What is the last song you heard?

What is the last book you read?

Does poetry count? The last thing I read was a poetry book for English class.

What is a talent you'd like to have?

I want to be a better artist.  I've always liked to draw. I can draw good, but I can't draw people really well.  I'd like to perfect that art.

What is your dream job?

To be a coach, maybe at the high school level.

What is your most treasured possession?

My iPod.I like to do sudoku puzzles and that game is on there. I have about 800 songs, videos, everything's on there.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

I wish I was taller.

What is one place you'd like to visit before you die?

Hawaii - i don't know why. That's what everyone says. It looks beautiful there though.

Kobe Bryant, Sanaa Lathan (Love and Basketball is one of my favorite movies), President Obama.

What was your favorite TV show growing up?

Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Everyone watched that.

Know a Gamecock: Kandyce Redondo

Today's Know a Gamecock features softball sophomore Kandyce Redondo. An electronic journalism major from Pembroke Pines, Florida, Redondo chose chose South Carolina over Florida Atlantic, UCF, North Florida and Jacksonville University.


What is your perfect meal?
Pasta. Just plain noodles, no sauce. Nothing, just plain white pasta.

If you could go anywhere before you die where would you go?
I would want to go to Africa and do a safari.

Name a few people you would like to hang out with.
Bob Marley and all of The Beatles.

What was the last book you read?
The last book I read was Breaking Dawn. From the Twilight Saga, the last one.

What is your favorite movie?
My favorite movie...of all time....I would have to say Drop Dead Fred. It's really funny. 

Who are your three favorite musical artists or bands?
Bob Marley, The Beatles, and I'll go with Lil' Wayne...mix it up a little.

Do you have a personal motto?
No worries. Love life.

If you could change one thing, what would you change?
I'd have to say, I'd like to be a little...about two inches taller. Two inches.

Know a Gamecock: P.J. Fulmer

Softball season starts on Friday as the Gamecocks host College of Charleston at Beckham Field at 5 p.m. so today's Know a Gamecock features Gamecock junior catcher P.J. Fulmer. A sport and entertainment major from Blythewood, Fulmer started 30 games behind the plate last season for South Carolina.

What is a talent you would like to have?
I would love to be able to sing or dance. You always see those kids at school, like you were automatically popular if you could dance or sing...do a back flip or something like that.

Name two people you would like to hang out with.
I'd love to hang out with Pudge Rodriguez. Pudge is my favorite baseball player ever, and I don't know, maybe Eva Longoria.

What is your dream job?
My dream job is just something with sports. That's one of the only things that really just keeps me interested all the time. I'm always watching Sports Center. I mean, it would be cool to work with ESPN, but I don't want to be the media or a journalist.

What is your personal motto?
Work hard. Everyday. Like it's your last. I mean, everything in life is going to happen for a reason, you just have to work for it.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Before every game Audrey and I always go up to the bullpen, even if she's not pitching that game or warming up. I'll stand on the home plate with my feet on both sides, and we play...I don't even know what it's called...but it's like slap-hands, and you do it five times through. If we win, we do that again, if we don't, we change the number.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what are three things you would have with you?
My cell phone, a bunch of food, and probably a TV; I need some sort of entertainment. If I could bring a friend instead of a TV, that might work too.

What is the last song you heard on your ipod?
Probably some Britney Spears song, I think. I think "I'm a Slave for You" is the last thing that came on; I was walking to class.

What is your greatest fear?
Heights. I cry on roller coasters.
