GoHorseShow.com Features Two Equestrian Signees

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Two new Gamecocks are featured in a recent article on GoHorseShow.com recognizing top exhibitors signing with top collegiate equestrian programs. Check out an excerpt below and read the full article here.

Bailey Mierzejewski chose USC after also contemplating Auburn and Texas A&M. "I know several girls that are currently on the equestrian team at USC, and, they all love both the team and the school," Bailey states. "On my official visit, I felt like I fit right in with everyone. The campus at USC is beautiful, and I was very impressed with the student opportunities. My decision was also highly based on academic programs. I believe that the six year pharmacy program at USC will be perfect for me."

Courtney Allen: "I had my decision narrowed down to two great schools, Baylor University and University of South Carolina. I would have loved to go to either, but South Carolina truly had everything I was looking for," she says. "I felt very fortunate to be recruited by such great programs. I am very excited to be a part of the Gamecock Athletic Program as an equestrian. They offer many things to the athletes that are very beneficial, such as access to tutors and impressive facilities."

THIS WEEK IN GAMECOCK COUNTRY...

All of this week's home events have conference implications. Equestrian will have an SEC Championship for the first time this year, and faces Auburn in their second event of the fall. Men's Soccer will also host a conference match on Sunday, hosting UCF at 3:30 p.m. Football will also take on the Dawgs in a highly anticipated SEC showdown this Saturday. We will host ESPN's College GameDay broadcast from the historic Horseshoe on campus. We will also host the Lowe's Tailgate featuring a free concert by country music artist Billy Currington at 5 p.m. on The Garnet Way in the former Farmer's Market.

Both tennis squads are also playing at home, with Women's Tennis facing rival Clemson on Wednesday followed by two more matches on Friday and Sunday and Men's Tennis hosting a doubleheader on Saturday. All of this week's tennis matches are currently scheduled to be played outdoors in the new Carolina Tennis Center.

With the 2011-12 season right around the corner, we wanted to take a look back at the past year. Over the next few weeks I'll be counting down the Top 15 Gamecock moments from 2010-11 across several sports from the Spurs Up perspective. It was a good year for the Gamecocks, so I hope you enjoy reminiscing with me!

Top Moments of 2010-11 #8.jpg#8 - Freshman Johnna Letchworth Named an All-American with Nation-Leading 11-1-1 Record

Johnna Letchworth3.jpegWe've had several freshman this year who made a huge impact on their teams (Marcus Lattimore, Bruce Ellington, Amanda Rutqvist, and Julie Sarratt to name just a few), so it's not a huge surprise that a freshman delivered our #8 Top Moment of 2010-11. Freshman Johnna Letchworth was one of 16 riders in the country (four per each of the four events) named to the Varsity Equestrian All-America team. Letchworth led the nation in the Horsemanship event with an 11-1-1 regular season record and a 4-1 post-season record for the best overall Horsemanship record in the nation, 15-2-1.

Three other Gamecocks, Carolyn Curcio, Maggie Fortune, and Kelsey Hart, received Honorable Mention recognition on the All-America team. The South Carolina Equestrian team has had a lot of great moments over the years, not the least of which are two Varsity Equestrian National Championships in 2005 and 2007.

With Letchworth and a great group of riders returning, the Equestrian team will be looking to stay on top in 2011-12. The season starts off with two home competitions - vs. Fresno State on Friday, September 23rd at 2:00 p.m. and vs. TCU on Friday, September 30th at 2:00 p.m. All home Equestrian competitions are held at One Wood Farm in Blythewood; admission is free so come on out!

Equestrian junior Taylor Singmaster was on the cover of this month's American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Journal supplement. The Journal is one of the top equine publications in the country. The photo was taken in April at the Varsity Equestrian National Championships in Waco, TX, and pictured with her is Caper, one of our team horses.

Great national industry exposure for our Gamecocks!
