We're just three days away from the first SEC home game of the season and great news - the game is SOLD OUT! Great job, Gamecock fans!
When you're in the stadium this Saturday be sure to pick up the gameday program for just $5. Senior center T.J. Johnson is the cover star this week as well as the focus of a feature story written by Media Relations Student Assistant Katie Jordan. Check out an excerpt and read the full feature in this week's program:
He tries to always encourage guys when they need it and be uplifting, but he's not afraid to get on guys when they need to be pushed or called out. The way Johnson leads both on and off the field is a direct result of his experiences when he was a younger player. As a freshman, Johnson became close to senior offensive guard, Lemuel Jeanpierre, who currently plays in the NFL with the Seattle Seahawks.
"When I first got here, I always just watched the seniors, but Lemuel was a guy I really looked up to," Johnson said. "He was always there for me to help get me through (the tough days)."
The relationship Johnson formed with Jeanpierre has been one of the most significant influences on Johnson's leadership style. Even though he is a quieter guy on the field, Johnson has made it a point to make himself available to the freshmen and sophomores for any advice they might need or want.
"Lem was the kind of guy that was just always there for me whenever I needed advice and I just want [the younger guys] to know that I am always there for them. I try to be for the freshmen what [Lemuel] was for me," Johnson remarked.
Other features in this week's program include team previews for equestrian and swimming and diving as well as this week's Carolina's Finest feature taking a look at junior men's swimmer Michael Flach, who made it to the 200-m Butterfly finals at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Our Inside the University feature takes a closer look at USC Connect - a bold initiative designed to integrate traditional classroom learning with an almost limitless range of beyond-the-classroom experiences.
We also look back on Sept. 22, 1979 and the Gamecocks' 35-0 victory over Duke for the On This Date feature written by Assistant Media Relations Director Andrew Kitick. A remarkable streak started on that day and a record was set that still stands today. Can you guess what both those are?
Be sure to pick up the program on Saturday at the game vs. Missouri presented by Founders Federal Credit Union.
Thank you to the Media Relations staff for their hard work on the program and their help with this post!
