Following practice Wednesday, Carolina Football coaches and players are feeling confident as they prepare to hit the road to Lexington to face Kentucky.
It's been two years since the disappointing 31-28 loss at Commonwealth Stadium and that game has been looming in the mind of the team, especially Marcus Lattimore.
"They are the only [SEC] East team in the past three years that has beat us, it stays on our mind," Lattimore said.
Although the memory remains sour amongst the players and coaches, they plan to use it as motivation to get on the field and win, "They embarrassed us, " Lattimore explained, "but we're getting ready to go to Kentucky and try to come back with a win."
When asked about the team's game plan, Lattimore has confidence in the offense because there are "so many play-makers that it's going to be hard for [Kentucky] to key in on one guy."
Junior quarterback Connor Shaw also feels good about the team's position going into Saturday's game,"Our goal is to get better every week and I think we've been doing that."
When questioned about the offense's strategy, quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus believes the Gamecocks have a big job to do, "We got to go out there and do what we're supposed to do to beat Kentucky and give our best effort against an SEC East opponent on the road."
Mangus also thinks the team must go into the game with a mission in mind and the only way to achieve that mission is through solid leadership, "Every good team I've ever been associated with has had good leaders and we have a lot of leadership in the locker room and on this football team."
In addition to an improving offense and strong leadership,Carolina has also been the least penalized team in the SEC. Coach Spurrier believes this achievement will play to their advantage against Kentucky,"our guys have been disciplined and we're trying to play some disciplined football."
Even though games against Kentucky have not boded well for the Gamecocks in the past, Coach Spurrier feels positive about the game and the condition of the team, "We are very healthy and we are looking forward to the ball game."
