Anthony Gill Leads Gamecocks in Freshman Debut

Men's Basketball head coach Darrin Horn said repeatedly throughout the offseason and during preseason practice that freshman Anthony Gill would be a difference-maker. Tonight, in the Gamecocks' opening exhibition game vs. Kentucky Wesleyan, he was just that.

Gill shot 5-for-7, scored a team-high 14 points and collected six rebounds in the  69-59 win.

"He did what I've seen him do since the first time I ever saw him play," said Horn after the game. "He's a producer. That's what he does...He's going to be a really good player for us; he did some really good things tonight."

Gill said after getting through the initial opening game jitters, he had fun.

"My first college basket is very exciting," said Gill. "When I first got out there, the first two minutes were a little rough with all the adrenaline. It's not the same as practice. But my teammates pushed me through it and I had a good time out there."

The Gamecocks open the season on 11-11-11 (easy to remember, right?) hosting Western Carolina at Colonial Life Arena at 7:00 p.m. Season tickets are still available via GamecocksOnline.com.
