Men's Basketball Newcomers Excited for Start of Practice

South Carolina Men's Basketball held media day Tuesday in preparation for the official start of practice on Friday. Several members of the local media came out to hear from head coach Darrin Horn as well as speak one-on-one with assistant coaches and the team.

Three new players join the Gamecocks this year, freshmen Anthony Gill (6-8  Forward, Charlotte, NC) and Damien Leonard (6-5 Guard, Greenville, SC) and junior college transfer Brenton Williams (5-11 Guard, Kissimmee, FL).

With just a couple months under their belts as students at Carolina, the three newcomers are adjusting to life as Gamecocks and are chomping at the bit to officially start practice on Friday.

"I'm very excited," said Leonard. "We've been working hard all summer and we're looking forward to it paying off and getting ready to practice in front of the coaches finally."

Over the past couple months, they've been getting used to their new surroundings like any other first-year student, little things like walking to class and being on a large campus with a lot of other students take some adjusting. (Though for Williams his answer was simple for his favorite thing about being at Carolina so far - The Dodie. "Because that's where we get breakfast, dinner and tutoring help!") With practice and the season right around the corner, the veteran members of the team have been able to provide a lot of guidance for the incoming guys.

"They've been telling me what to expect and what to get ready for and to be mentally prepared mostly more than anything," said Williams. "They told me the coaches are gonna be on us so just be prepared for it, it's normal.  And just stay focused and don't lose track of what's going on in practice."

Even only being together a few short months, the team has a good bond and chemistry, the veterans mesh well with the younger guys.

"We just feel like a family and everyone is really close," said Gill. "I definitely feel like at any point I can just go to any player on the team and just tell them something personal about my life and I'll feel comfortable with that."
