#3 The Gamecocks Take Down #1 Alabama

October 9th, 2010. Columbia, South Carolina. History was made.

In one of the biggest upsets in South Carolina Football history, the Gamecocks beat defending National Champion and No. 1-ranked Alabama, 35-21, with a near-perfect game.

"I think that this game was meant to be," said Steve Spurrier with a smile after the game.

It was the first-ever win over a #1 team for the Gamecock Football program and it happened in front of an ecstatic home crowd at Williams-Brice Stadium. This unforgettable day locked up a spot in our Top Moments of 2010-11 countdown at #3.

The buzz was in the air all week leading up to the game... could the Gamecocks take down another #1? Students prepared their best signs for ESPN College GameDay on the Horseshoe while fans frantically searched for tickets for the sold-out game.

Two days before the game I set the scene here on Spurs Up:

"The past year has been one full of huge moments and "firsts" for South Carolina Athletics... why not a few more? The No. 1 college football team in the country, Alabama, full of history and tradition... SEC Game of the Week on CBS at 3:30pm... site of ESPN College GameDay on the Horseshoe, the most historic area of campus... a sold out crowd filling Williams-Brice Stadium to the brim with Garnet, jumping with the sounds of 2001 and Sandstorm... you can just feel it in your bones can't you?? The moment couldn't be any better for a Gamecocks W. Beating No. 1's... It's The Garnet Way."

And beat #1 they did...

In addition to the team's near-perfect play on the field, Gamecock Nation was unmatched that Saturday. Rally towels constantly waving and the electricity of Sandstorm better than I had ever seen it. It was the perfect storm for a magical win and an amazing game day experience.
