July 2011 Archives

With the 2011-12 season right around the corner, we wanted to take a look back at the past year. Over the next few weeks I'll be counting down the Top 15 Gamecock moments from 2010-11 across several sports from the Spurs Up perspective. It was a good year for the Gamecocks, so I hope you enjoy reminiscing with me!

Top Moments of 2010-11 #12.jpg
#12 - Julie Sarratt Throws a No-Hitter in Her First Game

The 2011 season marked the start of a New Chapter of Gamecock Softball. We followed the team for six weeks leading up to the opening weekend for the Gamecock Confidential series as we got to know the team and the coaching staff under new head coach Beverly Smith. The season started with the Palmetto State Showdown, a series of games vs. in-state foes hosted here in Columbia at Beckham Field. Freshman Julie Sarratt made her collegiate debut on the mound in the third game vs. Coastal Carolina and would go on to allow no hits, strike out five, and add a single and a RBI double at the plate in the 5-0 win over the Chanticleers. She earned her first of three SEC Freshman of the Week honors this season for her efforts. The tremendous freshman performance and start of the new season under Beverly Smith makes for our #12 Top Moment of 2010-11.

Sarratt would go on to perform well for the remainder of the season as well. She led the team in innings pitched (103.2), strike outs (70), and wins (8) and threw six complete games, including two more shutouts. Looking forward to an even better sophomore season from the Gaffney star!

#13 - Cocky's 30th Birthday Party

Everyone's favorite Gamecock turned 30 on October 16, 2010, and we turned the event into a week of celebration, making for our #13 top moment of 2010-11. Coach Spurrier kicked off the festivities at his Tuesday press conference, presenting Cocky with a special cake, and the party continued to Men's Soccer, Women's Soccer, and Volleyball games over the weekend.

Cocky_Spurrier bday.JPGCocky got "interviewed" on the news and here on the blog I wrote about the busy life of Cocky and talked to John Routh, the first Cocky. Fans sent in dozens of great pictures of themselves with Cocky over the years. The photos were shown on the videoboard during the weekend's games. Crowds at the games serenaded Cocky with Happy Birthday and each team presented the bird with a signed ball. The birthday wishes for Cocky poured in from fans on Facebook and Twitter.

Check out photos from the week's events as well as the fan-submitted photos with Cocky:

#15: Alshon Jeffery's season-long 70-yard touchdown vs. Tennessee

Gamecock Athletics joined the fun at this week's Richland 101 for Kids event at Dutch Square Center. Around 2,100 kids and adults took over the mall concourse for the free youth program designed to teach students ages 6-12 about Richland County and the greater Midlands community.

Activities included exploring fire trucks and ambulances, speaking with Riverbanks Zoo staff, visiting the county's "Bug Man" to learn about insects, watching science experiments, etc. along with several kid-oriented tables and booths, including the Gamecocks.

Volleyball student-athletes Christina Glover, Teresa Stenlund, and Cara Howley helped pass out Gamecock Silly Bands and volleyball schedule flyers. At our display table kids got a chance to spin the prize wheel for items such as football posters and schedule cards, pom poms, lanyards and more.

Check out photos from the day's festivities below:

Always great to tell kids It's Great to be a Gamecock early on!

Top Moments of 2010-11 #14.jpg
#14 - Women's Basketball Upsets LSU, 63-61, at Colonial Life Arena

On January 6th, 2011, for the first time since the 1998 SEC Tournament, South Carolina Women's Basketball beat the Tigers of LSU. The Gamecocks never gave up and fought their way back into the game for a 63-61 win after trailing by as much as 18. Their never-say-die attitude and the bringing to an end of a long streak makes this our #14 Top Moment of 2010-11.

Five players scored in double figures, the team shot 50% from three-point range in the second half and 47.1% for the game, and went 13-of-17 on free throw shooting (76.5%) in the dramatic win. Clutch three-pointers from Markeshia Grant as well as La'Keisha Sutton and Ieasia Walker staying cool under pressure to knock down free throws in the final seconds helped seal the deal for Carolina.

The win was third-year head coach Dawn Staley's first over LSU and her 2004 Olympic coach, Van Chancellor.

Not long after the upset of LSU the Gamecocks would deliver two more big wins at home - against teams ranked in the top 20 in the country at that! Carolina delighted in a 57-48 victory over #20/24 Georgia on January 27th and a take down of #15/18 Kentucky, 66-61, on February 10th.

This upcoming season we'll look again for the Gamecocks' top trio of quick and explosive veteran guards, Grant, Sutton, and Walker, to lead the way under Coach Staley in her fourth season at the helm.

#15: Alshon Jeffery's season-long 70-yard touchdown vs. Tennessee
South Carolina Athletics hosted our annual media golf tournament Thursday morning at Cobblestone Park in Blythewood (also home of the Gamecocks' men's and women's golf teams). This year twelve foursomes comprised of various South Carolina coaches, staff members, and media who cover the Gamecocks took to the links while several more joined the festivities after golf for lunch, mingling with several coaches, and a press conference with Coach Spurrier. The goal of the event is to express thanks to the media for their coverage of all our programs as well as continue to build relationships with them for the upcoming year.

"This is a great opportunity for me since I rarely get to get out to school-specific SEC events," said ESPN's Cara Capuano, who is based out of Charlotte's ESPN Regional Television headquarters and covers a wide variety of sporting events for ESPN, primarily in the SEC.

The outing used "Captain's Choice" scoring, meaning that all four players play their first shot and whichever is the best shot, all four players play their second shot from there and so on. The teams played on Cobblestone's Garnet and Black courses, two different nine-hole courses with a par of 71.

While several foursomes came in with a 63, Coach Spurrier's foursome snuck away with the win with a score of 62. This year Coach Spurrier played with Capuano, Gamecock Radio's play-by-play man and legendary Gamecock Todd Ellis, and WOLO/ABC Columbia's Tim Hill. Ever the coach, Capuano said Spurrier practically caddied for them as well.

"I was the first putter, I'd get up there, read his line and show the way for the rest of the group," said Capuano. "He dropped five putts for us from the anchor position including eagling out on hole 18 - his drive, his approach, his 40-foot putt."

Media Golf Outing 2011 - Spurrier Foursome.jpeg
The winning foursome with Cocky: Spurrier, Capuano, Hill, Ellis. Check out more photos here.

Spurrier and his teammates weren't the only ones with strong performances. Robbie Liles (Director of High School Relations for football) and Rick Millians (sports editor of The State) both won closest to the pin awards while Gamecock Ambassador Pete Stokes and softball Assistant Coach Janelle Breneman each took home a title for the longest drive on selected holes.

After golf the foursomes gathered for lunch from Doc's Barbecue and conversation along with several coaches and media members who didn't golf. Men's soccer head coach Mark Berson and women's soccer head coach Shelley Smith each spoke with media about their upcoming seasons as did Cross Country head coach Stan Rosenthal. Football assistant coaches, softball assistant coaches, and other Gamecock Athletics staff members joined the group as well.

"I had the best time today, it was just really fun," said Capuano. "We had a great group. I got to know Todd Ellis for the first time and played with Tim [Hill] who is with our new ABC SEC Network affiliate here in Columbia. It was just a great opportunity to enjoy a beautiful golf course and great company and talk a little football as the season draws near."

Thank you to all the staff members and media members who participated and attended this year's golf outing! Special thanks to Cobblestone Park and Doc's Barbecue for their help as well.

Top Moments of 2010-11 #15.jpg
#15: Alshon Jeffery's season-long 70-yard touchdown vs. Tennessee

When you're named as a first team All-American, unanimous first team All-SEC, and a Biletnikoff finalist as only a sophomore, you're bound to have a great highlight reel. This year, a few of Alshon's catches stood out from the rest. One such catch is #15 on our countdown of the top moments of 2010-11: his season-long, 70-yard, defender-evading touchdown catch vs. Tennessee on October 30th, 2010.

The touchdown and extra point gave the Gamecocks a 31-24 lead they would never relinquish, going on to win 38-24 over the Vols.

With his fantastic 2010 season, Alshon set the single-season school records in both receptions (88) and receiving yards (1,517). He led the SEC in receiving yards per game, averaging over 100 yards per game with 108.4. With the 2011 season just around the corner, Gamecock fans hope to see another outstanding year from the 6'4", 230 lb. receiver.

I asked Alshon back in November what goes through his mind
when he makes a catch and turns downfield, such as with this touchdown, and his answer is definitely my top quote of the year:

"Do something to be great."

Photos from Coach Spurrier's Day at ESPN

South Carolina alum Laura Goldman, now a Production Assistant with ESPN, shared some great photos with me from Steve Spurrier's visit to the ESPN headquarters in Bristol today for the ESPN "Car Wash".  Coach Spurrier appeared live and recorded segments on various ESPN shows and platforms throughout the day. Hope a few of you caught him live on SportsCenter or on Twitter for his chat! Check out the pics:

Collision Injuries workshop ad.jpgThis past weekend USC Sports Medicine and South Carolina Athletics hosted athletic trainers and other medical professionals from around the state and southeast for a continuing education seminar on Collision Injuries. Over 120 professionals gathered at the Crews building here at Williams-Brice Stadium to discuss case studies, updated standards of care, and refreshers on concussions, oral/dental trauma, eye injuries, spinal injuries, spine boarding and more.

"We've talked about doing this for awhile," said Dr. Jeffrey Guy of USC Sports Medicine and Medical Director for South Carolina Athletics. "With being part of the university, having a medical school, an academic hospital, an exercise science department, and an athletic training program, South Carolina has so many components of a sports medicine support system. It's part of our mission as academic physicians and as athletic trainers to provide this type of support and education to the state."

Concussion is one of the hottest topics in sport right now and was the focus of several of the day's presentations. With accepted standards used in the past being called into question and being modified to fit our current understanding, Athletic Trainers (abbreviated ATC to reflect their certification) and all healthcare professionals dealing with these injuries must stay up to date on the most recent findings.

Dr. Ramon Ylanan of USC Sports Medicine helped update the attendees on the most recent standards regarding concussion from the 3rd International Conference on Concussion in Sport held in Zurich, which recommended concussions be considered as a single entity - it either is a concussion or it isn't. This current view abandons past standards of grading scales for severity that were often based primarily or solely on loss of consciousness and classifying concussions as "simple" or "complex", which have now been found to be incomplete or inaccurate views of concussion. Many of the different scales and tools were inconsistent and there was no universally accepted method for classifying the severity of concussions and thus return to play criteria. The new standard makes at least classifying the injury relatively simple, regardless of the apparent severity. Though some might consider an injury a "minor" concussion based on old guidelines, the new standard holds that there is no such thing - a concussion is a concussion. You won't see athletes just getting their "bell rung" and returning to play. The golden rule is, "when in doubt, sit them out."

Regarding return to play, George Wham, PhD, Athletic Trainer at Pelion High School, gave a great update on legislation that has passed in other states and proposed legislation here in South Carolina that would regulate return to play after concussion for young athletes. Wham also updated attendees, many of whom provide medical care for area high school athletes, on the South Carolina High School League's rules on returning to play which were recently revised to be more stringent. Dr. Jason Stacy of USC Sports Medicine later discussed the differences in risk and treatment for concussion between youth and adult athletes.

"One of the things we wanted to do with this is be able to get everyone together in one spot and have some healthy discussions. From the university standpoint, being able to provide this type of atmosphere not only for the athletic trainers but also for the doctors is great," explained Dr. Guy. "We wanted a variety of topics that would stimulate thought and bring up discussion including case studies from other schools and experts in the field."

While all the case studies were intriguing, one was particularly moving. Many Gamecock fans are familiar with the story of Johnathan Taylor, the Georgia outfielder who suffered two fractured vertebrae and resulting paralysis after a collision on the field with teammate and best friend Zach Cone this past March. Georgia Baseball Athletic Trainer Mike Dillon spoke on the days and now months following the injury and how medical staffs can better prepare for potentially catastrophic injuries, from emergency action plans to understanding insurance coverage to knowing where they will take athletes who need more specialized care (Taylor is now at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta).

Dillon also shared why he will be a Texas Rangers fan for life - the team drafted Taylor, who may never walk again, with their 33rd-round pick of the MLB Draft after drafting Cone in the 2nd round. They plan to find a place for Taylor somewhere in the organization whenever he is ready after completing his degree and advancing in his rehabilitation.

For more information on USC Sports Medicine check out their website,  the South Carolina Athletics Sports Medicine staff, and the University of South Carolina Athletic Training Education Program.

Anyone in Columbia who has driven by the Athletics Village at the Roost lately has seen firsthand the construction progress being made. Summer is hot but it's a great time to get a lot of work done while student-athletes are not competing.

We asked Jeff Davis, Associate Athletics Director for Operations and Facilities, to give fans an update on all the athletics construction and renovation projects happening right now. As many of our coaches have said, including most recently Coach Spurrier at SEC Media Days, the facilities improvements of recent years have had a big impact on our success. Great facilities help attract top student-athletes as well as provide support for them once they're here, so thank you to all the fans and donors who have helped make these improvements possible. Putting funding back into facilities is really paying off for South Carolina Athletics on and off the field.

Watch the video below for footage and updates on the progress of the Athletics Village, Colonial Life Arena basketball locker room renovations, work on Williams-Brice Stadium for the upcoming season, and more. Also, check out a few more tidbits about our projects below the video.

Here are a few additional notes from Jeff about our on-going projects:

Williams-Brice Stadium:
The ADA seating in the lower South End Zone at Williams-Brice for patrons with disabilities is being modified for this fall. Davis explained that ingress and egress to the area will be much easier for those patrons.

The renovations to the assistant coaches locker rooms in Williams-Brice are the final piece of the interior renovations for football (lobby, locker room, players lounge, sports medicine, etc.) first put in motion a few years ago.

Williams-Brice is undergoing a lot of preventive maintenance this summer, including electrical upgrades that will modernize the infrastructure and re-painting of the lower bowl.

Future projects at Williams-Brice including the video board and renovations of the practice fields are currently in the approval process.

Athletics Village:
The tennis complex is set to be complete in late August and will be the home of both our men's and women's tennis teams. You can hear more from men's tennis coaches Josh Goffi and Matt Lucas in this video update on the tennis complex in particular.

The parking garage will serve not only the athletics staff and coaches and student-athletes in the Athletics Village, but also provide additional parking for the general university on this side of campus.

In addition to the current renovation of the playing surface for softball at Beckham Field, a future project for the complete renovation and expansion of Beckham Field has been approved. We are currently in the process of reviewing proposals from architects and construction is planned to start after the 2012 season.

Completed areas of the Athletics Village include the anchor building, the Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center, the Roost Athletic Training Center renovations, and the upgrades and modifications on the South Energy Plant that included a new boiler and chiller to provide heat and air conditioning for the Athletics Village as well as helping the infrastructure of the south side of the university campus.

The Athletics Village's landscaping and hardscaping will be another important aspect of making it a very appealing and attractive area, as well as unifying the look with the rest of campus. The trees, brick pavers, fencing, and brick columns, etc. will all mirror other areas of campus:

I can't wait to see the finished products!

41 days... http://gamecocksonline.com/football2011

This is the first of several "Year in Review" posts looking back at different aspects or people of the past 2010-11 season in South Carolina Athletics. Hope you enjoy reminiscing with me!

While the 2010-11 season was a banner year for South Carolina Athletics in competition, Gamecock student-athletes also excelled in academics and in volunteering in the community.

Here are some of the year's high points:

- The Gamecocks landed the most student-athletes on the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll  for the fifth consecutive year with a school-record 79 student-athletes (including 31 football players, also the league high). We also led the conference with the highest number of student-athletes on the Spring Academic Honor Roll and the First-Year Academic Honor Roll.

- With the Fall 2010 semester Gamecock student-athletes set a new record for the highest departmental GPA ever at 3.146.

- Women's Golf led the way with a 3.568 GPA last fall, followed closely by Women's Swimming & Diving (3.512) and Women's Tennis (3.497).

- For the spring semester, 58 student-athletes earned a perfect 4.0 GPA and, with that, a spot on the President's List, while 161 were named to the Dean's List. 334 student-athletes, more than half of the student-athlete population, were named to the Athletics Director's Honor Roll (3.0 GPA).

- Two teams, Women's Tennis (3.576) and Men's Swimming & Diving (3.279), achieved their highest mark on record this spring. The Women's Tennis GPA was the department high for the spring.

- Football broke their own record for the third consecutive year, posting their highest GPA ever (2.779) this fall. They followed that up with their second-highest GPA ever this spring (2.711).

- Thirteen of South Carolina's athletic programs, including Football, ranked above the national average in the latest report of Academic Progress Rate (APR) statistics released May 24, 2011.

- Eight Gamecock student-athletes were named Capital One Academic All-Americans in 2010-11.

Thumbnail image for IMG_2084.JPG
A portion of the 67 student-athletes who graduated this spring.

In addition to their commitments in the classroom and competition, teams and student-athletes are involved in the community. This past year our student-athletes conducted a total of 3,884 service hours, which included contributions from every program. Football led all teams with 625 hours (Marcus Lattimore had a team-high 25.5 hours) followed by Equestrian at 472 and Women's Track & Field at 418.

For average number of hours, Softball, the Life Skills Team of the Year, led the department with an average of over 17 hours of service per team member. Women's Soccer (14 hours per team member) and Equestrian (13 hours) were also department leaders.

Individually, swimmer Lydia Hackert completed the most hours overall with 127.5 hours, followed by Kayla Blake (109.5 hours, Track & Field) and Chris Campbell (67.5 hours, Track & Field).

Community outreach took a lot of different forms this year. Student-athletes made visits to local schools, encouraged reading and literacy, helped serve the homeless at area shelters, hosted skills camps and clinics, collected bottle caps that equated to donated dialysis treatments, visited hospitals, participated as teams in charity runs/walks, shopped for Christmas gifts for a needy family, and that is just the start of the list!

L1060459.JPG
Softball in their "best" Christmas sweaters wrapping Christmas gifts to donate.

Kudos to our student-athletes for their hard work academically and their dedication to being great representatives of the Gamecocks out in the community. Also, thank you to all the staff in the Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center and the Academics/Student Support Services department for their commitment to helping our student-athletes be successful.

I look forward to writing even more great stuff this time next year!

Go Gamecocks!

Coach Tanner Visits Wounded Soldiers at Fort Jackson

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Ray Tanner, head coach of our back to back National Champion Baseball team, took time out last week to visit soldiers at the Fort Jackson Warrior Transition Unit here in Columbia. Check out the excerpt below and read more here.

Ray Tanner visits Fort Jackson.jpg
Ray Tanner, head coach of the University of South Carolina Gamecocks baseball team, spent almost two hours with the Soldiers answering questions, signing autographs and posing for photos.

"I always talk to groups about adversity and realism and perspective and those kinds of things. (But) you guys know far more about that than I do," Tanner told the Soldiers.

Before answering questions about the Gamecocks championship run and other topics, Tanner shared stories with the Soldiers to explain his approach to coaching and life in general.
...
Sgt. Addison Brown, a WTU Soldier who was involved in organizing the event, said that, as a Soldier, he could relate to Tanner's attitude.

"It's never about him. It's never about what he's accomplished. It's the bigger picture," Brown said. "You can relate to that more as a Soldier, because when you go on a mission, it's not about you."

Brown said that he knows from experience that visits like Tanner's can have a positive effect on Soldiers.

"When I was wounded (in 2007) we had different people coming to our unit. I didn't know them (all), but just to have someone who is a celebrity in the community or outside the community come and boost the morale. that's what it's all about," Brown said.

Col. John Nerges, Moncrief Army Community Hospital's deputy commander for nursing, shared a similar sentiment.

"These (Soldiers) today will remember the day they got to meet Coach Tanner, and it'll mean so much to them," Nerges said. "You can't buy it with money. This is an irreplaceable experience. (What) it does for morale in these Soldiers, you can't measure it."

Michael Roth.jpegThe Southeastern Conference announced today that the SEC had 43 Capital One Academic All-Americans in 2010-11, more than any other conference.  The league had 23 student-athletes earn first-team honors, an all-time high for the SEC.

Capital One Academic All-America Teams are voted on by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Eight Gamecock student-athletes represented South Carolina this year:

First Team:
Michael Roth, Baseball
Jimmy Maurer, Soccer
Mollie Patton, Soccer

Second Team:
Michael Zajac, Track & Field
Taryn Zack, Swimming & Diving

Third Team:
Blake Brettschneider, Soccer
Marvin Reitze, Track & Field
Will Traynor, Soccer

You can read the full SEC update here.

Great job, Gamecocks!

LATimes.com: "Get Cocky, South Carolina"

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Great read today on the Los Angeles Times' website entitled "Get Cocky, South Carolina" about the Gamecocks' prospects for a fantastic season. Check out some excerpts below and read the full article here.

But a funny thing happened last season in Columbia, South Carolina. The Gamecocks won the SEC Eastern Division title for the first time in program history, and Spurrier was named SEC Coach of the Year by his peers.

The exclamation point was a 36-14 romp over his beloved Gators at "The Swamp", a nickname he personally bestowed upon Ben Hill Griffin Stadium.

At 66, Spurrier has established South Carolina as a legitimate contender in the SEC, but that isn't enough to motivate a ride off into the sunset. After all, what coach would walk away from a roster capable of winning the national title?
....

Lattimore was expected to be an impact player last season as a blue chip true freshman, and he certainly didn't disappoint. Rushing for 1,197 yards and 17 touchdowns as a first-year SEC player is impressive, and there is reason to believe that better stats are on the way in 2011. After all, Lattimore improved his NFL-ready body and dishes out far more punishment than he takes.

If South Carolina's running back doesn't capture the Heisman, it may be because his standout teammate, WR Alshon Jeffery, steals votes. Coveted by then Tennessee head coach Lane Kiffin as a high school senior in 2009, Jeffery was told by the epically smug and arrogant Kiffin that a decision to play for the Gamecocks instead of the Vols would eventually lead to pumping gas.

With two collegiate football seasons under his belt, Jeffery is very much on his way to pumping gas...into the car of his choice after he is selected in the first round of the 2012 or 2013 NFL Draft.
...

It takes much more than an impressive collection of talent to win a national title, but capturing the crown without big-time players is impossible. Gamecocks Debut New Football Jerseys

South Carolina Football will be donning new duds when they hit the field this fall (50 days away for those counting at home!)

The new uniforms arrived this week. The Gamecocks have garnet, white, and black uniforms with several possible color combinations available. A few features of the uniforms differ from the past edition.

The stripes have moved from the side of the shoulder to the front and the font on the front of the jerseys has changed. One thing you won't see in the pictures is the traditional SEC patch, which will be added on the front opposite from the Under Armour logo.

The new jerseys feature new stripes on the sides of the back of the jersey and on the sides and back of the pants as well. The pants also feature an embroidered "GAMECOCKS" across the top of the rear.

The jerseys are a tighter fit and stretchier material with added ventilation areas to provide increased movement and to make it more difficult for opposing teams to grip.

One of the biggest things about the new jerseys are that they feature our custom official Garnet color from Under Armour that now matches the Garnet that has been used by the university for years. While the color may appear slightly different on various clothing materials, the Garnet will now be consistent across all sports' uniforms.

So what do y'all think of the new unis?

Brandi Chastain.jpgThe image of Brandi Chastain ripping off her jersey and celebrating Team USA's dramatic 1999 World Cup win in her sports bra is arguably one of the most iconic sports images ever. The victory was a spark for Women's Soccer and a group of superstar players including Chastain, Mia Hamm, and Julie Foudy to burst on to the national and international stage. A generation of young soccer players flourished with new role models to follow.

"I remember watching the games and I wanted to be them," said South Carolina senior forward/midfielder Lolly Holland. "They made our dream seem like it could be a reality. It was really inspiring. From that moment I knew I wanted to play at the highest level like they were and that's what I've worked for. They started just like we did and gave us hope that we could do it too."

Women's soccer has enjoyed many years of success since then and now in 2011, the nation and world are again captivated with the Women's World Cup and Team USA, who play Wednesday at noon ET vs. France in the semifinals. The South Carolina women's soccer team has been watching the Women's World Cup all along, getting together as roommates or as a team to watch, particularly Team USA's riveting down-to-the-wire victory over powerhouse Brazil on Sunday.

"There were about six or seven people at my apartment watching," said senior midfielder Kortney Rhoades. "We thought it was going to be done and then all of a sudden we're all on the couches screaming. It was crazy. It just goes to show that the game literally is until the last second."

Several Gamecocks have national and international experience, including senior Kayla Grimsley who participated in training camp with the US National Team's U20 team.

"We trained just like they train. It's the same style of coaching throughout all the different age levels of the national team organization," explained Grimsley. "I've played against some of the girls who are on the World Cup team and it was a great experience because everyone there has the same mentality of winning and fighting. Just like they proved against Brazil, it's not over until the last whistle."

While names like Hamm and Chastain have retired, a new crop of young international players are inspiring other elite players like the Gamecocks.

"I'm a fan of [Brazil's] Marta. She plays my style of play. She's very technical and quick. For the US I'm a fan of Lauren Cheney and Amy Rodriguez. They're two young players who are going to change the United States program," said Grimsley.

Incoming freshman Lani Smith added, "it's great for younger girls to watch these players. I think Hope Solo has really been killing it for the US. She is just so thirsty to win."

That thirst to win won't end with the Women's World Cup in July. The summer excitement has the Gamecocks looking forward to their upcoming 2011 fall season even more.

"Every day we've been working so hard on our fitness and we think a big part of USA's success against Brazil was that they were more fit and they didn't get tired at the end of the game and that's what we've been trying to tell ourselves," said Holland. "We've been trying to match that level that they have so that if we're down in a game we can still keep playing and believe in ourselves and that we'll be fit enough. That's our main focus right now. That last sprint is going to be worth it."

Thousand of Gamecocks packed the sidewalks along Main Street in downtown Columbia today to be a part of the celebratory parade for our back to back National Champions, South Carolina Baseball.

The team met up at Carolina Stadium to load up buses and caravan over to the parade staging area where their floats and custom rides awaited them. We could hear the buzz of the crowd before we even made the turn on to Main St and it grew louder and more packed as we got closer to the State House.

The exuberance of the crowd and the joy and gratitude they expressed to the team moved me. The team heard a lot of, "Congratulations!" and "Thank you!!" as the floats inched along. It seemed like almost every fan had a camera or cell phone out taking pictures and video with huge smiles on their faces. The team led a raucous round of GAAAME... COCCCKKSSS while waving and holding up the championship trophies for all to see.

We made our way down to the State House where everyone had packed in for a final ceremony and presentation. Thank you to all the fans who came out today and cheered on the team and to the city of Columbia for all their work for the parade as well.

Congratulations to the Back to Back National Champions, South Carolina Baseball!!!

It's Great to be a Gamecock!!!
