Gamecock Productions Staffer Earns Second Emmy Award

Justin Stoll, Assistant Gamecock Productions Director, is just 23 years old, but he already has two Emmy awards to his name. Stoll added the second piece of hardware to his shelf after last week's annual Sports Emmy awards were announced. He was among the winners for the HBO "Hard Knocks" series, which he worked on while working for NFL Films. The "Hard Knocks" series follows an NFL team throughout their preseason training camp. Stoll earned his first Emmy for the series focusing on the Cincinnati Bengals and most recently for the series on the New York Jets. Stoll has been named in nine nominations over the past three years as part of the crew working on "Hard Knocks".

This year "Hard Knocks" won for Outstanding Camera Work, Outstanding Post-Produced Audio/Sound, and the award Stoll was a part of, Outstanding Edited Sports Series/Anthology.

"I was a producer for the show so I'm a part of the 'series' win," Stoll explained. "I logged clips, edited segments, and put together pieces for the overall show."

Most primetime TV watchers are familiar with the Emmy awards show televised every year, but there are several divisions of the awards. This is the 32nd year the Sports Emmys have been awarded. This year's class of winners was heavily dominated by NFL-related content, including the highly regarded "Hard Knocks" series.

Stoll found out about winning his second Emmy from friends with NFL Films attending the Emmys ceremony in New York City. He was getting text message updates throughout the evening, then all of a sudden six text messages popped up from everyone there relaying the word that they had won for Outstanding Series, one of the biggest awards of the night. Stoll quickly texted his fiancée, his parents, and one of his best friends who had also won the Emmy but is out working in Los Angeles.

"The people who had the largest impact on the show - the senior producers, the coordinating producers, (NFL Films president) Steve Sabol, and a few others get their Emmy, but I'm seasonal so I got to buy mine," said Stoll. "There was no hesitation. I feel like it's a privilege to have been able to work for the show and to be able to have my name associated with it, so I will gladly take my option to buy it [laughing]."

Stoll joined the Gamecocks this past fall and has been able to bring the skills and techniques he learned while working for NFL Films to South Carolina and the Gamecock Productions crew led by Director Paul Danna.

"Going through four hours of footage every single day for seven weeks [on Hard Knocks] will help you see what good shots are and what good shots aren't, what works and what doesn't work," said Stoll. "Being able to apply that back to South Carolina has been a privilege and a changer in the way we're starting to do things."

One example is the Gamecock Confidential series leading up to Softball season that took viewers behind the scenes with the team as they prepared for their first season under new head coach Beverly Smith and her staff. Under the supervision of Danna, Stoll and Kyle Lewis, Assistant Gamecock Productions Director, several student-assistants did much of the work to produce the six-episode series.

"The production mentality he brought from [NFL Films] helped us with Gamecock Confidential. The cinematography, helping the students develop the storyline, everything he learned from NFL production-wise, etc.," said Danna. "He's been able to teach our students shooting techniques, cinematography techniques, and editing techniques that we've seen carry over and it's helped raise the level of our productions here. We've raised the bar."

Stoll has brought a "nothing but the best" mentality from NFL Films to his work at South Carolina.

"They only accept the best at NFL Films and having that mentality going into every production that I do now only helps me get better and I think helps everyone around me get better because I expect the best out of everything that I do. I don't settle for anything less."

Congratulations to Justin on his second Emmy award and we look forward to seeing more great work from him and Gamecock Productions!
