What's this Black & White Box on My Football Poster? More on QR Codes

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
This year's football poster has gone high-tech. For those of you who picked up a 2011 Football poster at the Garnet & Black Spring Game on Saturday, you probably noticed the black and white box in the lower left hand corner. It's called a "QR Code" and it's a type of bar code. Once scanned (using an app you download to your smartphone) it can direct you to any digital content designated by the creator of the code, such as a certain web page or video or even specific phone functions. QR codes are growing in popularity and use among sports organizations and other major brands. You've probably seen them in magazines, other companies' ads, or maybe even a game program. Our goal is to be a leader in evaluating and using certain new technologies to continue to deliver the Gamecocks-related content fans want.

QR Codes are a cool way to give something printed a digital extension and give you more content. For example, you have the printed football poster in your hand, but if you scan the QR code, it takes you to football video content right there on your phone. In this instance we set up the QR code to go to a special YouTube playlist of football videos. What was just a static poster now has a dynamic, interactive aspect to it. We'll be adding videos to the playlist throughout the spring and summer as the 2011 season approaches.

So, how do you use a QR Code?

1. Download a free barcode scanner application on your smartphone (in the iTunes Store or Android Market, search QR Code or barcode scanner)
2. Open the scanner app on your phone
3. Point your phone's camera at the code and click.
4. The app reads the code and directs you to a designated mobile site where you can watch videos, receive coupons, enter a contest, etc., right from your smartphone.

Who has tried out the QR Code on the poster? What did you think and would you like to see more new uses of technology from us? What are some cool ideas you've seen in the sports or business world?

Thanks in advance for feedback!
