Football Depth Chart Sees Some Changes After Spring Practice

The new football depth chart released yesterday reflects a few line-up changes from the pre-spring depth chart. Some shifts in position occurred throughout spring practice while some players' great spring practice performances translated to rising on the depth chart.

DeAngelo Smith, the Joe Morrison Player of the Spring on offense, elevated himself to second behind Alshon Jeffery at wide receiver. Jason Barnes did well shifting from the outside to the slot receiver position pre-spring and remains the starter there followed by Ace Sanders and Bryce Sherman.

There was some shuffling on the offensive line, Center being the only position not reflecting any changes from the pre-spring depth chart with starter T.J. Johnson anchoring the line. Corey Robinson moved over to defensive tackle. Rokevious Watkins moved to right tackle from right guard and will back up Kyle Nunn at left tackle after Robinson's move. Terrence Campbell switched from left guard to right guard and will be backed up by newcomer Kaleb Broome.  A.J. Cann was elevated to first string at the left guard position with Kenny Davis listed second after switching over from the d-line.

Corey Simmons (whose progress we discussed earlier this month) solidified himself as the back-up to starter Justice Cunningham at tight end. Kenny Miles and Eric Baker are listed as second and third respectively behind running back Marcus Lattimore. With Stephen Garcia currently indefinitely suspended, the depth chart reflects him sharing the top QB spot with Connor Shaw, followed by Andrew Clifford and Dylan Thompson.

The defensive line remained solid led by rising seniors Travian Robertson (DT) and Melvin Ingram (DE) and All-SEC performer Devin Taylor (DE). Shaq Wilson will take the lead role at middle linebacker with Rodney Paulk moving over to the top spot at the Will linebacker position. Damario Jeffery moved from Spur to join Paulk and Quin Smith at WLB. DeVonte Holloman moved over to the Spur linebacker spot from strong safety and is listed along with Antonio Allen at first string.

There were several other switches in the secondary. Holloman's move to Spur left an open spot at strong safety, now filled by D.J. Swearinger (who was the Joe Morrison Player of the Spring on defense). Swearinger's starting spot at free safety was filled by Jimmy Legree, who moved over from cornerback. Most Improved safety of the spring Brison Williams will back up Legree at FS after starting the spring at SS. Stephon Gilmore and Akeem Auguste continue to hold the top spots at corner while Victor Hampton got the nod as back-up to Gilmore after being named the Most Improved DB of the spring.

New Special Teams Coordinator John Butler, who got to campus just a few days before the start of spring practice, got his first look at his new team and personnel. Swearinger, Sanders, and Miles are now listed for kick return while Gilmore and Sanders are now joined by Nick Jones at punt return. Some fluidity remains at kicker with Jay Wooten listed first for place-kicking though split with Joey Scribner-Howard for kickoff duties. Patrick Fish and Scribner-Howard currently share top-billing at punter.

After a productive spring, the Gamecocks will move into their summer workouts schedule with eyes on the start of practice at the beginning of August. The line-up will shift again and see additions during pre-season practice when the incoming class of signees will join the fold.
