We did a shoot this morning with Alshon Jeffery for one of our upcoming video series featuring several football student-athletes. The series will debut in a few weeks so definitely stay tuned!!
After the shoot I talked with Alshon for a few minutes about what he's doing during the offseason to get ready for the season.
"Working hard," he said. "Just keep doing what I've been doing, but even harder. I want to do whatever it takes to become one of the best players in the country. I'm also taking two classes."
With NCAA rules, teams can't formally practice with coaches during the summer months, but that doesn't mean the work stops. Many of our student-athletes across many sports stay on campus in the offseason. Alshon will be joined by the majority of our football student-athletes who stay here throughout the summer taking classes, working hard in the weight room with the strength & conditioning staff, as well as running drills and working on their game on their own in small groups. I posted a photo on Facebook earlier this week of Jason Barnes, Justice Cunningham, Dylan Thompson and Alshon all out on the field on their own working on routes, which is a regular occurrence for them and other players. Several dozen fans commented, including one from Tamara Heil who said, "this is what we need to see and keep seeing....HARD WORK! I like it and I LOVE my Carolina Gamecocks! GO COCKS :)"
"I'll be working with the quarterbacks trying to get better every day," Jeffery said. "We'll have group workouts in the weight room a few days a week but you can come in on your own pretty much every day as much as you want, just depends how much you want to get better and how much you want to accomplish."
Knowing that Alshon lives and plays football by the phrase "do something to be great", there's not a doubt in my mind what he'll be doing this summer.
