Once a Gamecock, always a Gamecock! Good luck, Cliff! We'll be rooting for you!
BL: What are some of your favorite memories or moments as a student at Carolina and as a softball player?
Laura Mendes: My favorite memory as a student was when I got an "A" on my first Criminal Justice test. I took a class with Theresa Clement, she's my favorite Criminal Justice professor, so I was pretty happy with myself. As a softball player, definitely when I had the game-winning RBI hit when we beat Alabama sophomore year.
Ashley Chastain: My favorite memory as a softball player would probably be beating Alabama two times my sophomore year to win the series. That was a big weekend for us as a team and something I'll never forget. As a student I've just really enjoyed being on campus here, developing relationships with professors. I've definitely enjoyed the student side of being a student-athlete so that's overall my favorite.
April Borchardt: Probably all the fun times we have on the bus rides and doing really well against some of the top teams in the nation.
P.J. Fulmer: As a player our best win would have been the Alabama series a couple years ago, I think they were ranked #4 at the time and we won the series. We played so well together. In general though, just getting to know teammates. You get to know people so well traveling with them. You make a lot of really good friends so that's a really good memory to have, all of our experiences together. As a student, one of the reasons I came here is because of my major (Sport & Entertainment Management) and just the opportunities I've had, like my upcoming internship. I wouldn't get those if I wasn't at this school.
BL: What are you going to miss the most once you leave?
LM: Probably the softball field actually. When I'm done here I'm not totally sure what I'm going to do so it's going from a family-oriented situation with all the girls I've been playing with for four years and this family union, so it's going to be different to leave everybody and come back and watch them play.
AC: Definitely the girls. The team, the relationships that I've made. We are like a family so I definitely think I'll miss the people the most.
AB: Definitely the rest of the girls. I love the game and I'll definitely miss that too, but you meet so many people and make some really good friendships and that's what I'll miss the most, just being around our family bond.
PJF: Just having a schedule. Knowing what's going on and what's coming next. And of course I'll miss all of my teammates and I'll definitely miss getting to know the new coaches this year. Having to start over and make new and more friends to hang out with in a new place is tough. I'm from here though (Blythewood) so if I come back (after my internship) I'll still see them. But if I don't come back, I'll miss them a lot. I'll miss the competition. You're never going to get competition like this anymore.
BL: What advice would you leave for some of your younger teammates?
LM: Work hard in school and on the field. Get ahead on the field as much you can. Any extra preparation and practice is what keeps you ahead in the game.
AC: Don't take a day for granted because it goes by so fast. Before you know it you'll be sitting here answering these questions and you'll be wondering, "where did the time go?" So just don't take anything for granted and enjoy every moment of it.
AB: Go all out. You never know when it's going to be your last so you should give it your all.
PJF: It may be cheesy, but you can't take the time for granted. I know my freshman and sophomore year I said, "well, there's always next year," but there's really not always next year. They've got to just take the time they have right now and just play it and do what they have to do at the time. Don't waste it.
BL: What is your favorite place on campus?
LM: Carolina Café! Best bagels in town!
AC: My favorite place is definitely the Horseshoe by far. I'm a History major and it holds a lot of historical meaning. I've learned a lot about that and I love being there.
AB: Probably the Horseshoe because it's such a relaxing, open area. It's really beautiful there.
PJF: Besides the field? (BL: It can be the field!) Well, it's changed over the years, it would have to be the field. Freshman year it would've been Russell House, but now definitely the field.
BL: What have you learned or what's the biggest difference for you now as a senior vs. when you were a freshman?
LM: When I was a freshman I was all over the place. I had teammates directing me on the field, I wasn't sure where to go all the time, unsure of the systems. But now I have it down pat and I'm confident in myself and my abilities. I know what I can do, on and off the field. Time has shown me and proven what I can do.
AC: I really think you just grow up. Becoming an adult, having responsibility, thinking about the rest of your life and making decisions to better your future. You step on campus your first day as a freshman and you never think about those things and then four years later it's, "oh my gosh, what am I going to do with my life?" so the biggest change for me is just growing up and becoming an adult.
AB: Growing up and being mature. Filling your shoes in your role on the team. You have a little more room to make mistakes as a freshman.
PJF: You just learn to take charge and do what you need to do. Like freshman year I remember being terrified on this field with everyone being older than me and playing in the SEC. I had to learn that you're not playing against the name on the other team's jersey. It may be Florida but we can hang with these people. Being a senior you've played them a few times and you know you can handle it.
BL: What are your plans for after graduation?
LM: I have a few options right now. I could stay for grad school. I could get a job here in the Criminal Justice department, Terry Cousins has been working with me on that. Or I could go home to Florida and get a job there, be close to my mom and my nephew. Either way it will be a good situation.
AC: I'm going to grad school here at USC. That starts in June so I'll have a month off and then school starts back all summer. It's a one-year program. I'm going to be the grad assistant for the team next year so I'll still be around. I think I'll really enjoy that side of being part of the team. My master's will be in teaching social studies, tying the teaching and history together to become a teacher and coach one day. I'm happy to be able to give back to this team that has blessed me so much.
AB: I haven't really decided yet! Hopefully find a job somewhere! I don't know if I want to get into psychology or coaching or something along those lines. My family wants me to go home but I don't really want to [laughing].
PJF: I'll be leaving June 5th to go to Fort Collins, Colorado, for a summer internship with Triple Crown Sports then I will graduate in August. It will be fun. After that I really want to come home. I know Colorado is pretty but I'll miss the South. If I get a job offer somewhere else I'll take it though, I'm not afraid of traveling and being somewhere else. Just maybe not up north, it's a little chilly up there [laughing].
Good luck to all our seniors. Once a Gamecock, always a Gamecock!

Great quote from Tanner while discussing the team's leaders and dealing with losing players to injury:
"One of my coined phrases I've used my entire coaching career is 'win anyway'. Regardless of the circumstances, regardless of if a pitcher has a bad outing or if you have four unearned runs in the first, or you get four hits, you gotta find a way to win. And it's not that easy. It's easy to say and hard to do, but as long as the approach is that way, I can live with it."

After the shoot I talked with Alshon for a few minutes about what he's doing during the offseason to get ready for the season.
"Working hard," he said. "Just keep doing what I've been doing, but even harder. I want to do whatever it takes to become one of the best players in the country. I'm also taking two classes."
With NCAA rules, teams can't formally practice with coaches during the summer months, but that doesn't mean the work stops. Many of our student-athletes across many sports stay on campus in the offseason. Alshon will be joined by the majority of our football student-athletes who stay here throughout the summer taking classes, working hard in the weight room with the strength & conditioning staff, as well as running drills and working on their game on their own in small groups. I posted a photo on Facebook earlier this week of Jason Barnes, Justice Cunningham, Dylan Thompson and Alshon all out on the field on their own working on routes, which is a regular occurrence for them and other players. Several dozen fans commented, including one from Tamara Heil who said, "this is what we need to see and keep seeing....HARD WORK! I like it and I LOVE my Carolina Gamecocks! GO COCKS :)"
"I'll be working with the quarterbacks trying to get better every day," Jeffery said. "We'll have group workouts in the weight room a few days a week but you can come in on your own pretty much every day as much as you want, just depends how much you want to get better and how much you want to accomplish."
Knowing that Alshon lives and plays football by the phrase "do something to be great", there's not a doubt in my mind what he'll be doing this summer.
127 days until kickoff...

Garrett Chisolm, who just played his senior season in 2010 and is set to graduate in May with a degree in Sport & Entertainment Management, shadowed Hyman as part of his semester-long internship within the athletics department. (I posted a great article from Yahoo! Sports about Chisolm's journey yesterday, definitely a good read for any Gamecock fan).
Travelle Wharton, former Gamecocks offensive lineman who is preparing to start his eighth season in the NFL with the Carolina Panthers, came to campus during spring practice to spend the day with the coaches, then made another trip to spend the day with Hyman and get a taste of the administrative side of athletics. Wharton said although he plans on continuing his playing career for at least a few more years, he is starting to think about plans for life after football.
"I didn't really know what to expect coming in," said Wharton. "It was very informative and I appreciate the opportunity to come down and learn more about the administrative side."
Wharton attended the Management Team meeting (a group of all the senior administrators and department heads), our monthly All-Staff meeting with all athletics department staff, and met with Hyman and other administrators and sat in on other meetings throughout the day.
"Everything was so well-structured and organized," said Wharton of the meetings he attended. "Everyone has their part and they can get through a lot of information in a short amount of time."
Chisolm has been interning with the athletics department all semester as part of graduation requirements for his degree in Sport & Entertainment Management (SPTE). He is on track to graduate this May after completing his internship. He has worked with several departments this semester, including the ticket office, compliance, academic services, and development. Chisolm attended the NFL Combine in February but was limited in the testing he could perform due to recovering from ACL surgery. He hopes to continue playing football professionally in the NFL but he is also interested in a career in athletics administration. He said what really piqued his interest originally was taking an introductory SPTE course in which Associate AD Charles Waddell visited as a guest speaker and talked about his job.
"Mr. Hyman thought shadowing him would benefit me and show me what it's like to be an AD," said Chisolm. "It was interesting to see all the meetings and communication. He [Hyman] has to know every single thing going on with South Carolina Athletics. I have been surprised by how quickly things can change from day to day or even hour to hour and all the financial aspects of the department and all the work that goes into development and facilities."
Chisolm attended the management team meeting, a luncheon, and sat in on various meetings with Hyman throughout the day.
"We're really seeing Garrett come out of his shell this semester and it's great to see him getting a sense for athletics administration," said Hyman. "I really enjoyed getting to know him more today; he's a wonderful young man."
From my standpoint, it was interesting to see both a current student in Chisolm, still starting out and finding his way, and a more removed graduate in Wharton, both contemplating their next steps and learning more about the athletics department. I witness it firsthand around the department every day, but it was just another example of the way the athletics department embraces and supports both current and former student-athletes in what they want to accomplish.

I wanted to share this great piece by Jason Cole, a national NFL writer for Yahoo! Sports, on Chisolm coping with the loss of his parents, going from walk-on to starter on the football field, graduating in May and more.
I've included a short excerpt below, but an excerpt can't begin to do the story justice so click here to read the full story by Cole.
"For all of that accomplishment amid tragedy, Chisolm struggles as he is asked how he has been able to deal with the loss, to see his parents - his "whole world," as he put it - get ravaged by cancer. With his leg shaking, Chisolm often can't even find the words to describe how he has done it. Four questions go by and Chisolm can't even respond, increasingly looking like a little boy lost in a big man's suit.
"I'm still dealing with it," he said.
In contrast, people around Chisolm can't stop talking about him.
"You can go an entire career and you'll never see another story like this, never," said South Carolina strength and conditioning coach Craig Fitzgerald, who was there the day Chisolm showed up for a tryout and was there two months later when South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier yelled at his assistants to put Chisolm in the starting lineup. "It's not one thing; it's the whole story. Just walking on, do you realize how rare that is? If you're a walk-on in the [Southeastern Conference], you're lucky if you finish out your eligibility by being a part-timer on special teams. You might start a few games along the way as a part-time fullback. You don't become a starter in a couple of months, especially on the offensive line." "

DeAngelo Smith, the Joe Morrison Player of the Spring on offense, elevated himself to second behind Alshon Jeffery at wide receiver. Jason Barnes did well shifting from the outside to the slot receiver position pre-spring and remains the starter there followed by Ace Sanders and Bryce Sherman.
Coordinator of Facilities Jim Shealy
There was some shuffling on the offensive line, Center being the only position not reflecting any changes from the pre-spring depth chart with starter T.J. Johnson anchoring the line. Corey Robinson moved over to defensive tackle. Rokevious Watkins moved to right tackle from right guard and will back up Kyle Nunn at left tackle after Robinson's move. Terrence Campbell switched from left guard to right guard and will be backed up by newcomer Kaleb Broome. A.J. Cann was elevated to first string at the left guard position with Kenny Davis listed second after switching over from the d-line.
Corey Simmons (whose progress we discussed earlier this month) solidified himself as the back-up to starter Justice Cunningham at tight end. Kenny Miles and Eric Baker are listed as second and third respectively behind running back Marcus Lattimore. With Stephen Garcia currently indefinitely suspended, the depth chart reflects him sharing the top QB spot with Connor Shaw, followed by Andrew Clifford and Dylan Thompson.
The defensive line remained solid led by rising seniors Travian Robertson (DT) and Melvin Ingram (DE) and All-SEC performer Devin Taylor (DE). Shaq Wilson will take the lead role at middle linebacker with Rodney Paulk moving over to the top spot at the Will linebacker position. Damario Jeffery moved from Spur to join Paulk and Quin Smith at WLB. DeVonte Holloman moved over to the Spur linebacker spot from strong safety and is listed along with Antonio Allen at first string.
There were several other switches in the secondary. Holloman's move to Spur left an open spot at strong safety, now filled by D.J. Swearinger (who was the Joe Morrison Player of the Spring on defense). Swearinger's starting spot at free safety was filled by Jimmy Legree, who moved over from cornerback. Most Improved safety of the spring Brison Williams will back up Legree at FS after starting the spring at SS. Stephon Gilmore and Akeem Auguste continue to hold the top spots at corner while Victor Hampton got the nod as back-up to Gilmore after being named the Most Improved DB of the spring.
New Special Teams Coordinator John Butler, who got to campus just a few days before the start of spring practice, got his first look at his new team and personnel. Swearinger, Sanders, and Miles are now listed for kick return while Gilmore and Sanders are now joined by Nick Jones at punt return. Some fluidity remains at kicker with Jay Wooten listed first for place-kicking though split with Joey Scribner-Howard for kickoff duties. Patrick Fish and Scribner-Howard currently share top-billing at punter.
Check out the full post-spring depth chart in PDF form here.
After a productive spring, the Gamecocks will move into their summer workouts schedule with eyes on the start of practice at the beginning of August. The line-up will shift again and see additions during pre-season practice when the incoming class of signees will join the fold.

South Carolina Baseball sits in a three-way tie with Vanderbilt and Florida for first place in the SEC, 31-8 overall with a 14-4 record in league play. The Gamecocks do hold series wins over both the Commodores and the Gators.
Christian Walker was named SEC Player of the Week after batting an unbelievable .909 (10-for-11) this weekend at Mississippi State. Walker is tied for first in the SEC with 41 RBI, second in slugging percentage at .623 and total bases with 94, is third in batting average (.371), runs scored (41) and home runs (8). He also sits at sixth with a .449 on-base percentage. This was the fourth week in a row a Gamecock earned one of the SEC's awards.

The tournament runs Wednesday-Saturday. Every player in the field will play one round at Columbia Country Club and one round at Cobblestone Park during the first two days (alternating each day), and after the cut, the final two rounds will be held at Columbia Country Club. Tee times and pairings can be found at egolfprofessionaltour.com.
Former Gamecock Mark Anderson (left) will tee it up on the PGA Tour this week for the second time as a professional, playing for the third straight year in The Heritage, which begins Thursday at Harbour Town Golf Links at Hilton Head Island. He played The Heritage as an amateur in 2009 after winning the Players Amateur in the summer of 2008, then earned his way in as a professional last year and this year. Anderson currently ranks 54th on the Nationwide Tour official money list.
Good luck to all the Gamecocks competing this week!

*Special thanks to Wes Todd, Media Relations Director for Men's Golf, for his help with this blog post.
Alex Jackson, a student at Carolina attending the ladies clinic for the first time, said what she learned the most was all the work that goes into every detail of football.
"Everything has to be planned out to the T," said Jackson. "It was great getting to know the personalities of the players and coaches, getting a window into their world. All the coaches are funny."
Several women also said it was interesting learning about the signals and play calls and how the coaches teach the players to remember them.
"This is the second year we've done it," said Kellah Webster. "We love it, we have a ball. It's interesting to learn about the plays and know what's going on. It helps to understand everything a little more. I always love Coach Spurrier. I also loved Lorenzo Ward and Brad Lawing doing all the signs."
For their part, the coaches said many of the women know more than expected and they always get asked great questions. In addition to the coaches, the players in attendance at the clinic also earned a lot of praise from the women. The players participate in a panel discussion along with their mothers then mingle with the clinic participants and sign autographs during lunch. Tonja Childers, Tori Gurley's mother, said it was a fun experience.
"I enjoy mingling with the ladies and learning. I've learned something new and different each time I've come," said Childers. "During the season we're so focused on the boys so it's nice to just be around the girls."
"It's amazing the way they can turn on the smiles for every one of us when you know they have to be tired of taking pictures," said Becky McKay.
"All the players who come out when they don't have to," said Bobby Gregory. "I asked one of them, 'did you have to come or did you volunteer?' and he said he volunteered so that was really nice. The whole event is a lot of fun."
"It's good to meet the young men and talk to them for a little bit, getting a chance to get their autographs," said Lana Cox. "They're all so very delightful with us. And I know it's a bunch of cackling women but they're all accommodating."
The women toured the locker room, athletic training room, weight room, and the rest of the football facilities before running on to the field to the sounds of "2001" to participate in a throw and catch drill and interception/fumble return for a touchdown drill led by the coaches.
But of all the fun they have during the day, they may even have the most fun when they return home - to jealous husbands.
"My husband always wants to know," said Lisa Christmas. "When we go home we have to give a full report to all the guys. They are so jealous we're here and they can't be!"
Laura Shelley echoed Lisa's sentiments, saying, "the first year I came my husband made me take notes and let him know everything that went on!"
Thank you to all the ladies who came out for the event and to the coaches, staff, players, and their families who put on such a great time for Gamecock fans.

BL: What are the things you think the team is doing really well right now and what are some things you would still like to see improve?
Holbrook: We've obviously pitched very, very well. Michael Roth has been terrific, Matt Price has been really good, John Taylor has been unbelievable. I think the backbone of our team is our pitching staff. There's no question we can pitch and we think we can play defense with anybody in the country. We got to get better offensively. We need to put together better at-bats and hit for a little bit higher average than we are right now. I don't think we've played as well as we're capable of playing offensively yet and I think that's a good thing.
So what are some of the things you're focusing on in practice right now to move in that direction?
With the new bats we try to keep the ball out of the air as much as we can. We've hit way too many fly balls. In the past you could get away with it with the older bats but now you can't. Those fly balls just aren't getting out of the park. So we have to focus a little more on staying on top of the ball, hitting line drives and ground balls and putting pressure on the defense. If we do those things our batting average will go up and we'll be a bit tougher to defend. At times we've been pretty easy to defend with hitting balls in the air.
We have a lot of special players, but Jackie [Bradley Jr] has really risen to the top on the defensive side of the ball, always seeming to make these highlight reel catches. What are some of the qualities about him as a person and a player that help him be so successful?
He's just very, very gifted. He's not necessarily the best athlete in the world. He's a really good athlete, but he's not some elite runner. He gets great jumps. He has a knack for doing the right thing, great instincts, great baseball savvy. He just knows how to play. As a team we're really good up the middle. Peter Mooney has played really well defensively as of late. Scott Wingo is probably one of the best second basemen in all college baseball. When you're strong up the middle defensively you're going to be pretty good. And with Jackie, Scott, and Peter we think we're a little bit better than most teams we play up the middle defensively.
Has anyone surprised you so far this season?
We've had a lot of surprises. John Taylor has been an incredible surprise. We knew he was good and would be an important part of our staff but he's done it time and time again and been extremely consistent. You could probably make a case he's our MVP through the halfway point of the season and no one would have predicted that. Michael Roth pitching as well as he has pitched, it's kind of a surprise the way he has done it. We knew he was going to be really good, but his pitching numbers are among the best in the country. For a guy that only throws 84 miles per hour you'd think he'd get hit a little more than he does, but he hasn't. Great savvy and great confidence in himself. John and Michael, what they've been able to do has been incredible.
Not only that but Michael has been going deep into games, 7-8 innings.
And coming from being a reliever we wondered about that, would he be able to hold up after the 5th or 6th inning from a stamina standpoint. And he's been terrific. Last year he pitched to one hitter, maybe two hitters at a time, he'd come get the lefties out then we'd take him out. Now we're asking him to pitch the whole game almost so it's a different role for him. But he's so strong and he works so hard in the weight room. He does a lot of work between starts to prepare himself from a stamina standpoint to be able to pitch deep in games. He's made himself what he is.
What sparked you to get on Twitter?
Actually Coach Tanner came to me and basically said, I'm not going to do Twitter, but I think you need to...to keep our recruits informed, keep our players informed, keep ours fans informed about what's going on in our program. I don't tweet as much as I would like, but when I do I think we're giving some information people are interested in. It's been beneficial for us. If you tweet all the time people might not read them all so we want it to be important, effective, and informative.
Do you think the profile of college baseball has risen or grown the past few years?
Well, we play in a league that is very unique and different from a lot of leagues across the country. The SEC is on a different playing field than everyone else as far as attendance, exposure, stadium environments, it's just different. When you're in the SEC you don't feel like you're starving for attention. It's here already. Other teams may feel they need to get out and promote their team or program, they don't get the attention that teams in the SEC get. I think that's a huge advantage for teams in our league. Baseball is extremely important in the SEC and the universities treat it as such. That's not necessarily the case in other leagues.
Does the new SEC Thursday Night Baseball series just add to that exposure and prestige of playing in the SEC?
I think it's a big recruiting tool for us. Every Thursday from this point forward there's going to be an SEC match-up on Thursday night - what a great showcase for all the programs in our league. Being able to play in front of a national television audience and promote SEC baseball is a great thing for our conference and it's a great thing for our program.
What's your favorite road trip in the SEC?
I haven't been to LSU yet because we haven't had that rotation. I'm a big fan of Nashville, Tennessee. I think it's a great city and I love country music so going to Vanderbilt is pretty neat. I like going to Kentucky - the horses, the farms. There's a lot of great places to go. Going to Alabama and seeing some history of college football in the Bear Bryant Museum, that's neat. Each school has something very unique. Arkansas has a great, very unique baseball environment in their stadium among the best in the country. There's not been one bad trip yet and I think that's a good thing for our league.
We talked before when I was working on the post about walk-up songs. Now that we're a little further into the season do you have a favorite?
I like Christian Walker's just because the fans get into it and the bullpen gets into it. I think if you can get a walk-up song the fans get into it and like it when it comes up, that's a win. His is unique. I'm not necessarily a big fan of the song, but it gets the fans involved and I think that's pretty cool.
Baseball is preparing to face No.1-ranked Vanderbilt in a three game series this weekend at Carolina Stadium. The Gamecocks and Commodores are currently tied for first place in the SEC Eastern Division with identical 10-2 conference records. General admission/standing room only tickets remain for the Friday and Saturday games, both at 7:00 PM. Outfield Bleachers and general admission/standing room only tickets are available for Sunday's game at 1:00 PM.

With the sweep of Tennessee this past weekend, Carolina Baseball has now won all eight three-game series it has played this year.
The No. 3-ranked Gamecocks will face the top-ranked team in the country for the second time this season when No. 1 Vanderbilt comes to Columbia this weekend for a three-game series. Carolina previously won its three-game series vs. then-No.1 Florida, two games to one.

QR Codes are a cool way to give something printed a digital extension and give you more content. For example, you have the printed football poster in your hand, but if you scan the QR code, it takes you to football video content right there on your phone. In this instance we set up the QR code to go to a special YouTube playlist of football videos. What was just a static poster now has a dynamic, interactive aspect to it. We'll be adding videos to the playlist throughout the spring and summer as the 2011 season approaches.
So, how do you use a QR Code?
1. Download a free barcode scanner application on your smartphone (in the iTunes Store or Android Market, search QR Code or barcode scanner)
2. Open the scanner app on your phone
3. Point your phone's camera at the code and click.
4. The app reads the code and directs you to a designated mobile site where you can watch videos, receive coupons, enter a contest, etc., right from your smartphone.
Who has tried out the QR Code on the poster? What did you think and would you like to see more new uses of technology from us? What are some cool ideas you've seen in the sports or business world?
Thanks in advance for feedback!

ORLANDO EARLY HEADED TO NC STATE
We wish Coach Early the best as he heads to NC State to join longtime friend Mark Gottfried's new staff:
"I want to thank Coach Horn and the University for the opportunities I had at South Carolina. Coach Horn has the basketball program moving in the right direction. Over the course of the last year, and more specifically over the course of the last several weeks, Coach Horn has been an unbelievable leader for the staff and team.
"I'm leaving South Carolina because this is an opportunity for my family and me that I can't pass up. Mark Gottfried and I are longtime friends and have a very close relationship. When I left Alabama, I left to take a head coaching position, but Mark and I have always talked about working together again in the future, and that opportunity has opened up for me at NC State."
Coach Horn:
"I appreciate Coach Early and the effort he put into South Carolina basketball and wish he and his family the best at NC State. When you have good, experienced people on your staff there is always a chance they will move on. Coach Early was given an opportunity to join Coach Gottfried, someone he has a long coaching history with.
"We will find the right person to fill the vacancy on our staff, someone who will make us better as we continue to move forward."

BL: What has been your biggest focus for the wide receivers in spring practice so far?
SSJR: Continue to learn and improve, cut back on mistakes, get smarter. Learn how to play fast, learn what to do. We want to be very assignment-centered. We do have a very talented group, more athletic than maybe we've had in the past but with repetition and learning we are trying to cut back on mistakes and cut back on assignment errors.
Obviously Alshon has emerged as a top player but who else has really stepped it up?
You know, we got this running back named Marcus Lattimore who has really shown up for some reason... [laughing]
Ha! Let me clarify that, what other wide receivers do you expect to step up?
I've got a good group. Ace Sanders is another guy who had a good true freshman year last year and did a lot of good things. Jason Barnes is a 5th year senior who we hope to give an opportunity to have a good year. He's had some highlights throughout his career. D.L. Moore is another we hope can have a good season. DeAngelo Smith has really played well this spring. Bryce Sherman is so quick. Nick Jones, Lamar Scruggs, we've got a good group of guys, we really do. And then we signed some freshmen. Damiere Byrd is one of the fastest kids in the country, he's going to get an opportunity. Alshon's brother, Shamier Jeffery, we're looking forward to seeing what he can do. K.J. Brent was one of the first wide receivers we offered over a year ago. He's a talented, tough, intelligent player that we really expect good things from. We've got a good group, hopefully we can spread it out and have two or three more really good players besides Alshon.
Has anyone surprised you?
With DeAngelo Smith it's the first time I've really just seen him play. I've always known he was talented. I've been impressed with him but everybody is about where we expected them to be.
What are some of the things that set Alshon apart and make him so special?
He's a very good, intelligent football player. Obviously he's very big - 6'4", 230 pounds - and he actually runs better than you'd think he would. He just has a knack for receiving the football, a natural ability to catch the ball the way he does. He has very strong hands. He's kind of quiet, doesn't say much, doesn't have a lot of expression, but he's sharper than he gets credit for, he really is. He's a neat young man, I haven't coached many like him, I really haven't, just a very talented, hard-working kid.
When I did a Q&A with Alshon in the fall and asked about what goes through his mind on the field he actually quoted you, saying you always tell them, "do something to be great".
Yupp, be great. I like that too because I can hold them all accountable for that. It's rare that you have a group that can talk about that and we have a couple that can - they want to be great. We'll bark at them for everything, "hey, you know that's not good enough. You guys told me you want to be great, I'm going to hold you to that standard."
What really goes into being recruiting coordinator?
You do a little more paperwork. You have to have a greater grasp of everything and see everything. In the past I worried about the area I recruited and my wide receivers and that's it. So now I just have to have a perspective of the entire class. Another really big issue is oversigning. Last year was the first time the rule came into play where it affected people so that will be a very interesting issue as we move on. We have to be very careful about who we offer scholarships to and accept commitments from because it's a little different than it used to be.
What is your favorite memory at South Carolina so far?
Beating Alabama. Beating Clemson, those games have been some good ones. I've been fortunate to have a lot. Beating Florida was pretty good too.
What is your favorite play to run?
I can't tell you that! [laughing] It's a pass play to Alshon, that's all you need to know.
Anything else from your end fans might want to know?
I'm excited about Bruce Ellington. He's not allowed to do anything with us until summer. He has to go through one academic year so we'll get him officially in the summer and find out what he can do. Hopefully it'll be a smooth process. He's a talented kid, a really good kid so we're looking forward to having him. I told him [when recruiting him originally] he could play both and he said "well, right now I want to play basketball" and I said, "well okay, if you ever want to play football, call me back" and he did.

Graham said then:
"Chaun Gresham and Corey Simmons have worked really hard and they're just learning the little things: you line up different, your stance is different, you're not a defensive end anymore you're a tight end. Looking at signals every play, doing stuff totally different, trying to avoid people as opposed to running into them. They've done a good job in week one, their learning curve has been very fast because we're not slowing down the plays that we're putting in for them. They're learning. I tell them not to get frustrated, just keep working hard and by the end of the week you'll feel a whole lot better about what we're teaching."
Gresham and Simmons are working for second on the depth chart behind junior starter Justice Cunningham. Cunningham and Mike Triglia (who is sitting out spring practice after injuring his knee in December) are the only returning players with game experience at the position, which presents an opportunity for Gresham and Simmons to possibly get more playing time sooner than had they stayed on the defensive side of the ball. The 2011 season will be Gresham's third as a Gamecock. He redshirted as a freshman in 2009 and this past season played mostly on special teams while listed at defensive end. Simmons will be a redshirt freshman this season.
A couple weeks after I first talked with Coach Graham I followed up to see how the two young guys are progressing. Simmons played both tight end and defensive end in high school, so the transition has been somewhat easier for him.
"It's fun, I'm enjoying it," Simmons said of the transition. "I played both in high school so I'm just getting back to what I used to do."
Gresham said he played a little offense in high school as well, but that the biggest differences are the contact and the speed of the game.
"I'm so used to running and hitting people instead of having to set up and block or take a hit," said Gresham. "And the speed, it's just so much faster, so much more up tempo than high school."
And although he's feeling more confident now, that wasn't necessarily the case on the first day of practice at his new position.
"Oh it was crazy," Gresham said, laughing. "I didn't know what to do, I was all over the place. I was getting aggravated because I kept messing up, but as I've kept practicing I've started getting the hang of it. Coach [Jay] Graham and Coach [Andy] Boyd drill us and drill us. They make sure we know the plays, know our assignments, make sure we know what we got to do."
Simmons said the hardest part of the transition for him has been understanding everything that is happening on the field at one time, but that the coaches throwing him right in the mix and letting him make mistakes has helped him learn.
"Learning the concepts of each route [has been the hardest]," Simmons said. "You can't just run your route and be in the way thinking you're going to get the ball every time. You have to make sure you're in the right position so the person who is supposed to get the ball for each play is in the right place. You have to understand the whole offense not just your role."
For his part, Coach Graham has seen improvement throughout the first few weeks of practice, particularly in the players' ability to make a quick turn after catching the ball to try to run and make plays compared to initially, when they would just catch the ball and get down.
"They're doing a good job now, understanding they're offensive players, starting to move like offensive players," said Graham. "That's the thing I've noticed the most. They're improving and understanding the offense so they're getting the plays and lining up quicker. I'm yelling out there, 'you got it?' and they're saying 'yeah, I got it!' They're getting a little more confidence in what they're doing so that's a good thing to see."
Keep an eye out for Gresham (#29) and Simmons (#95) during the Garnet & Black Spring Game on Saturday at 1:00 PM and be sure to stick around afterwards. The first ever Gamecock Fan Fest will start on the field at Williams-Brice Stadium about 30 minutes after the end of the spring game.

*Interesting side note about Gresham - Gamecock legend George Rogers is his uncle (his mother's brother). Gresham said it was a small part of why he came here, but that he didn't really get to come to many games with Rogers when he was younger. "My mom really didn't let me come see him because of the publicity. She really didn't want me to come here because of him," Gresham said, smiling. Apparently there is a bit of sibling rivalry - Gresham's mom went to Alabama.

Check out highlights from the Gamecocks' first extra innings game of the season this past Saturday, a 4-3 win over Kentucky in 10 innings:
ROOSTER CROWS
Baseball is 22-5 and 7-2 in the SEC. At this point last season, South Carolina was also 7-2 in the SEC. After three weeks of conference play, the Gamecocks are in a four-way tie for first place in the conference with Alabama, Florida and Vanderbilt.
Senior infielder Adrian Morales tied a school record for doubles in a game with three in the 4-3 win over Kentucky on Saturday. Morales reached base five times and was 3-for-3 in the win. He scored the game-winning run in the victory as well. He is the 24th player in school history to have three doubles in a game; the last was Christian Walker on May 2010 at Kentucky. Morales leads the team with a .359 batting average (33-for-92) with 23 runs scored. He has a .479 on-base percentage and a .554 slugging percentage.
