Recently Gatorade representatives visited Columbia to meet with South Carolina student-athletes, Athletic Trainers, Strength & Conditioning coaches, and sports nutritionist. The meeting was a part of a series of meetings with a select group of schools and professional teams to get product feedback and discuss future product ideas and launches. One of the more interesting aspects of the meeting was the different needs and priorities of different sports. The hydration and nutrition needs and desires are going to be different for a football player and a cross country runner, for example.
When Director of Sports Medicine John Kasik told me about the visit I was intrigued because as an alum and current staff member, anything that positions South Carolina as a leader in the athletics world gives me pride. Gatorade has a LOT of team partners, so it speaks to South Carolina's prominence to be consulted with for product feedback.
"Gatorade has a 40-year history of studying the best athletes in the world in order to know what is needed before, during and after activity to maximize performance," said Gatorade rep Molly Carter. " We value the relationships that we have with institutions such as the University of South Carolina as it allows us to determine specific athletic nutrition and fueling needs. As we transition into a leader in sports nutrition innovation, we need the insights from elite athletes such as the Gamecocks. These valuable insights allow us to drive our future product innovation and development."
