Preseason baseball conversation heating up, parking deadline reminder

As we sit recovering from the snow and ice it's hard to imagine sitting in the sunny stands of Carolina Stadium for baseball, but it's just around the corner. The home opener is a three game series vs. Santa Clara starting February 18th at 3:00 PM.

No one will soon forget the celebrations this summer when baseball won the National Championship, the school's first NCAA title in a men's sport. Now we head into a new season in a new position - the school everyone wants to beat.

Roster changes create a few questions heading into the 2011 season, but there are a lot of high hopes for this team's performance. The team is ranked in various preseason polls, including No. 7 by College Baseball Lineup and No. 14 by Collegiate Baseball. As the season draws closer the Gamecocks will likely appear in more preseason rankings.

Individually, junior outfielder Jackie Bradley, Jr. and sophomore right-handed pitcher Matt Price are garnering a lot of attention in the preseason. After being named the Most Outstanding Player of the 2010 College World Series and leading the Gamecocks in hitting last season, Bradley, Jr. was named to the first team of National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Preseason All-America Team as well as the Louisville Slugger Preseason All-America Team by Collegiate Baseball. With a 5-1 record and a school record 13.41 average strikeouts per nine innings, Price was named to the second team of both lists. Both Price and Bradley, Jr. were named top prospects for the 2011 MLB Draft by Baseball America.

Another point of pride for the team, South Carolina ranked No. 4 in the NCAA for attendance for the 2010 season. This is the 11th consecutive season that South Carolina has ranked among the top 15 in the nation in attendance and 2011 will likely be no different. Season ticket sales are humming along at a fast pace. We have already surpassed last year's total and with five weeks left until the start of the season we hope to sell all of our season ticket availability for the 2011 season.

Reminder: The deadline to order baseball season parking is TOMORROW, January 14th, 2011.

Spring is just around the corner!

It's a history-making National Championship.

It's more overall wins than any SEC team over the last 11 years.

It's a beautiful day at Carolina Stadium.

It's the Garnet Way.
