Great anecdote about O-line coach Shawn Elliott from "Inside the Chart" with Andy Demetra. Read more from this post on the Gamecock ISP Sports Network page and hear more from Andy on Twitter at @GamecockRadio.
"If anybody should be accustomed to winning conference championships, it's Gamecocks offensive line coach Shawn Elliott. The man won five straight Southern Conference titles at his alma mater, Appalachian State, before leaving for South Carolina in January.
Yet while walking down the aisle of the Gamecocks' Delta charter Saturday, Elliott - whom I had gotten to know during the Spring Gamecock Club circuit -- hit me with a hard, karate-style slap on the shoulder. "How about that!" he said. I couldn't tell where his intensity stopped and his excitement began. Two hours after the final whistle, Elliott's blue eyes still burned with a fired-up glint.
A conference championship should feel routine to someone like him. But Shawn Elliot is also a Camden, S.C., native who attended South Carolina football games growing up. At his introductory press conference, he proudly stated, "I've always been a Gamecock fan." If anyone can appreciate the history the Gamecocks made Saturday night, and the toppling of such a tortured history in the SEC, it's Elliott - and it radiated in his body language. He may have a handful (literally) of conference championships, but you could tell how special this one was for him.
Shawn Elliott probably didn't need the plane to fly home."
