Carolina student-athletes attend Networking Seminar

The Life Skills department of South Carolina Athletics holds events every year to help student-athletes develop their career paths and professional skills.

On October 1st, the department hosted a Networking Seminar for senior student-athletes to teach them about networking skills, building professional relationships, interviewing "do's and don't's", and the importance of things like promptness and preparedness in presenting a professional image.

The lessons extend to professional dress, what makes a good handshake, and even to having a professional-sounding voicemail message or email address. Student-athletes are also given tips on how to maximize the services provided by the University's Career Center, where all students have access to a wide range of career assistance including mock interviews and job listings. Watch video of the event from GamecocksOnline.com. to hear Life Skills Assistant Erica Nelson explain more about the program.

The department hosted a make-up seminar for several student-athletes whose schedule or class conflicts prevented them from participating in the first event. I caught up with the Life Skills department at their make-up seminar this past week, held in "the Dodie", SC's new Academic Enrichment Center. I found it interesting to be a fly on the wall as student-athletes worked on the "student" role and were able to interact with representatives from BP Barber, Coke, Spirit Telecomm, Target, BB&T, AXA Investments, Colonial Life Arena, Columbia Convention Center, and University of South Carolina Academic Services.
