October 2010 Archives

South Carolina Men's Soccer closed out their home regular season with a bang, a 3-0 win over Memphis on Senior Day.  The team will play their final regular season game away at Kentucky on November 7th before moving on to the Conference USA Tournament.

Going into Senior Day I asked each of the seniors about some of their favorite memories and moments as student-athletes at South Carolina and what they will miss the most when they graduate:

Evan O'Dell,  Defense, Duluth, GA

"Beating Clemson all four years and hopefully making the NCAA Tournament this year...hanging out with my friends, being on campus, going on trips and just experiencing college... I'll miss being around these guys, the team, we always had a good time on our trips and it's going to be hard not being around these guys."

Sam Arthur, Forward, Roswell, GA

"My favorite memories are all the trips we went on together, hanging out with the guys, experiencing new places. Last year when we went to Northwestern was the first time I'd ever been to Chicago. We got to tour the city and I really liked seeing a different city and lifestyle. ... University of South Carolina has a lot of great things to offer. Going to football, basketball games, watching us beat Kentucky and Alabama, those have been two special things. I'll miss being with my friends and teammates mostly. I'm around these guys every day of my life. It's going to be weird not being with them all the time, hanging out with them doing the simple things."

Mark Wiltse, Defense/Midfield, Belle Meade, NJ

"As a student-athlete some of my favorite moments have been big highs on big wins here over the past four years, coming back to the locker room and celebrating with the guys is a great feeling. I'm probably going to miss the team the most, the guys in and out of the locker room...bumping the music in the locker room after a big win, those moments are cherished and they're going to be missed."

Will Traynor, Defense, St. Charles, MO

"Being a part of Gamecock Nation, being a part of the atmosphere and the feel you get on campus and being a part of a great athletic department ... I'll miss stepping out on the field under the lights. It's a feeling you only get a few times in your life and it will be missed. "

Blake Brettschneider, Forward/Midfield, Lilburn, GA

"Probably starting our collegiate career off with a huge double OT win over Clemson, just getting to know the guys, probably too many memories to even count, just having friends for life. I'll definitely miss the team, the camaraderie...and the South Carolina fall weather."

Michael Lindsay, Forward, Starkville, MS

"My favorite memory is beating Clemson in double overtime our freshman year, then beating Clemson four years in a row. I'll definitely miss the team, living with the guys, being around them all the time. I'll also miss the road trips and going to different sporting events watching our other friends and student-athletes play."

Jimmy Maurer, Goalkeeper, Lawrenceville, GA

"My favorite memory is shutting out Clemson four years in a row, four big wins to start off our seasons. I'm definitely going to miss all the guys on the team, especially the senior class in general. Four of us came in all from Atlanta and playing on the same club team for years so this is the last year we get to play together so that will be a big thing I miss."

Love that they all treasure beating Clemson as much as I do. Congratulations to these Gamecock seniors and best wishes for the future!

Beautiful day in Columbia for football and even better with a Gamecocks win over Tennessee, 38-24. The win is South Carolina's sixth, so the Gamecocks are officially bowl eligible.

Depending on the winner of this afternoon's game between Georgia and Florida, South Carolina could also retain sole possession of first place in the SEC East, setting up a big match-up with Arkansas next weekend at 7:00 PM in Williams-Brice Stadium. Arkansas returned a portion of their allotment, so tickets are still available for Gamecocks fans via the South Carolina Athletics Ticket Office: 1-800-4SC-FANS or online.

Thank you fans for a great game atmosphere today, stay tuned to GamecocksOnline.com this afternoon for complete post-game recaps, stats, and photos!

Go Gamecocks!

Tonight's big match-up vs. Florida for the SEC Championship is also Senior Night, where we'll be honoring the team's five seniors. I sat down with them after practice this week to find out what some of their favorite memories are and what they will miss most about South Carolina when they graduate. The common theme of the conversation was definitely the sense of family and the close relationships they have developed over the years. Watch the video below for more from our seniors:

Mollie Patton - Goalkeeper, Milford, Ohio

Brooke Jacobs - Forward, Chambersburg, Pennsylvania

Brittiny Rhoades - Defender, Wilmington, Delaware

Maggie Blackwell - Marietta, South Carolina

Maddy Kill - Midfield, Marietta, Georgia

Inside the Women's Basketball schedule

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The Women's Basketball schedule was released today so I asked Coach Dawn Staley her thoughts on the scheduling process and the tough competition the Gamecocks will be facing. Click here to see the full schedule and get more information.

The first thing to realize is that the scheduling process can be long and drawn out. It often takes a good year to find and schedule non-conference opponents, negotiate guarantees, get contracts signed by both schools' athletics departments, get approvals, and then finalize the schedule.

This season, Coach Staley and the women's basketball staff needed to schedule 12 non-conference games. Short notice changes and adjustments often have to be made as teams will drop out when scheduling conflicts arise, if they're playing in a pre-season tournament for example, and also occasionally when personnel changes. Sometimes it works out for the team's benefit. This season a game vs. Illinois was a late addition to the schedule after another team from a smaller conference dropped out, further raising the competition level on the Gamecocks' schedule.

This year the way the University's final exams schedule shaped up, one game vs. N.C. State landed during exams which meant that before the schedule could be finalized, it had to go through a special approval process. The team did their research with each athlete's class schedule to make sure none of them had a direct conflict and wouldn't have their studying time adversely affected. They then submitted the schedule for approval by the athletics director, university president, and conference commissioner. Now that all those approvals have been made, the schedule can be released to the public.

In addition to Illinois and N.C. State, the Gamecocks have several games against household names- North Carolina, Clemson, Penn State, and Stanford are all on the schedule this year along with Xavier, the Gamecocks' season opener, who finished last season ranked No. 5 in the USA Today Coaches Poll. And that's just NON-conference. The SEC is one of the best women's basketball conferences in the country and the Gamecocks' schedule includes perennial powers Tennessee, LSU, and Georgia.

South Carolina will also face a lot of in-state competition at home in the Colonial Life Arena, taking on Charleston Southern, Presbyterian, and South Carolina State in addition to the Nov. 18th game vs. Clemson and an exhibition game vs. Lander on Nov. 5th.

As Coach Staley pointed out, we always strive to play a tough, competitive schedule every season and this one will be no different. Looking forward to getting started in next week!

You can get season tickets for Women's Basketball starting at just $50 for general admission or $100 for the Family Four Pack. Call 1-800-4SC-FANS or go online: http://gamecocksonline.cstv.com/tickets/ticket-office.html.

Field maintenance at Williams-Brice explained

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Over the past few weeks while the football team has been playing away from Williams Brice Stadium, we noticed some work being done on the football field. Gamecock Athletics' Sport Turf Manager Clark Cox took the time to explain to me the maintenance his crew was performing. Cox holds a degree in turf management and I think I learned more about grass in a few minutes than I had learned in my lifetime. All our athletic fields at South Carolina are bermuda grass (Tifway 419 hybrid variety, bet you didn't know that one!) which thrives in the heat of South Carolina, but it takes more than a little bermuda to keep our fields in premium condition.

Once the weather starts to cool bermuda grass starts to slow down and doesn't repair itself as well, eventually going dormant and turning brown. To maintain the look and condition of the field throughout the season it must be supplemented with another variety. After the Alabama game, Cox and his crew "overseeded" the field with ryegrass, a grass that can maintain a green cover through the colder months, then covered it with a sand topdressing and watered it for several days. Once the ryegrass has time to take root and start growing, the crew resumes their regular mowing.

20101018150846.jpg

Above: Cox shows the ryegrass growth approximately one week after overseeding

Of note, one of the things that takes a significant amount of time on game week is painting the field - the endzones, numbers, hash marks, the Gamecock at mid-field, etc. Cox's crew typically starts on Thursday morning preparing the field for a Saturday game day, painting all day Thursday until about mid-day Friday.

After Tennessee returned a portion of their ticket allotment, it left us with a couple thousand more tickets to sell to Gamecock fans for the game Saturday.

On Sunday there were about 2,000 tickets left and now we're down to about 1,500 tickets remaining. I'd love to see a stadium fully packed with Garnet on Saturday and only a few specks of orange!

The Gamecocks have won 12 of their last 13 home games... and crowd support is definitely a huge factor in our home field advantage. Go Gamecocks!

This Friday at 5:00 PM, the South Carolina Swimming & Diving teams will go up against rival Clemson for the last time at the Carolina Natatorium. Clemson is dropping their programs after next year so this is one of our last chances to beat the pants, or swimsuits in this case, off the Tigers in the water. It's also the team's first home meet of the season.

Friday is a big night, with this meet at 5:00 and the Women's Soccer team taking on Florida for the SEC Championship at 7:00, so come out and support our Gamecocks in these big moments!

Women's Soccer plays for SEC Championship Friday

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
As the Women's Soccer season wraps up this week, the SEC Championship will come down to one game... South Carolina vs. Florida this Friday. If our Gamecocks win, they are the regular season SEC Champion and the No. 1 seed going into the SEC Tournament. If they tie, the Gamecocks and Gators are Co-Champions, but SC will get the No. 1 seed in the Tournament.

As the final regular season home game, this Friday's match will also be Senior Night for the Gamecocks as we honor five senior players (more to come on them on Spurs Up Blog later this week). The team is also playing the game in honor of the late Jill Darr Rowell, a former Gamecock golfer and friend of the soccer coaching staff, who will be recognized in a special presentation.

The past year has brought a lot of success and "firsts" for Gamecock Athletics. Women's Soccer won the SEC Tournament last spring to be SEC Champions for the first time and a win this Friday would bring them their first regular season SEC Championship and the first for the university since Baseball in 2002.

We've been one of the leaders in the nation for average attendance for Women's Soccer so I expect this Friday won't be any different, especially with the conference title on the line.

BE THERE!

Spurs Up Blog Fans of the Week!

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
With a standing room only crowd at Softball this past Friday, it seems only fitting that our Fans of the Week come from that game.

20101022195705.jpgSoftball fans (from left to right) Katie Forbes, Ashton Jarrett, Stephanie Saylors, and Hillary Stringer found a spot to squeeze in at Beckham Field to get a glimpse of the Gamecocks and the NPF All-Stars in action.

Thanks for the support and go Gamecocks!!

- Brittany Lane, Spurs Up Blog

Friday night's softball game vs. the National Pro Fastpitch All-Star Team brought out an overflow, standing room only crowd to Beckham Field. The game, part of NPF's "Back to School" Tour, was a great end to South Carolina's fall practices as fans were able to get a sneak peek of this year's squad under new head coach Beverly Smith. Click here to watch a video feature about the game on GamecocksOnline.com.

It was an important night for the sport of softball. I saw and spoke to several young softball players and softball teams in their uniforms in the crowd, all excited about the chance to see their idols play on the pro team as well as watching the hometown girls of SC. As Coach Smith put it, "for them, the dream is alive." Pitcher Cat Osterman was one of the biggest stars of the evening, attracting quite an audience even just warming up to take the mound. Osterman said the Back to School Tour has been a lot of fun for the players and a great way to meet new fans and build awareness for their league. They've had great, boisterous crowds everywhere they've been and, said Osterman, "this one was no different."

Both Coach Smith and the NPF squad praised the crowd and thanked them for their support. Women's Basketball Coach Dawn Staley mingled with fans throughout the game and even helped toss out t-shirts. Several members of our National Champion Baseball team were also on hand to get a glimpse of the elite playing. As one starstruck player said, "I'm here to see Cat." Little did they know they would end up getting just as much attention. Not only did Gamecock fans encircle the baseball players for autographs, even NPF star pitcher Danielle Lawrie (won a National Championship with University of Washington, 2009 National Player of the Year) sought out College World Series MVP Jackie Bradley, Jr. for a picture.

Above: Baseball players with Cat Osterman

20101022214835.jpg
Above: Two NCAA Champions: Jackie Bradley, Jr. and Danielle Lawrie

Both the Gamecocks and NPF graciously stayed on the field for over an hour after the game signing autographs and taking pictures with fans. However, even among superstars, Cocky can always steal the show - our beloved bird was quite popular among picture seekers.

The night set the stage for an exciting and energetic 2011 season for the Gamecocks. See the slideshow below for more photos from the game:

Carolina student-athletes attend Networking Seminar

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The Life Skills department of South Carolina Athletics holds events every year to help student-athletes develop their career paths and professional skills.

On October 1st, the department hosted a Networking Seminar for senior student-athletes to teach them about networking skills, building professional relationships, interviewing "do's and don't's", and the importance of things like promptness and preparedness in presenting a professional image.

The lessons extend to professional dress, what makes a good handshake, and even to having a professional-sounding voicemail message or email address. Student-athletes are also given tips on how to maximize the services provided by the University's Career Center, where all students have access to a wide range of career assistance including mock interviews and job listings. Watch video of the event from GamecocksOnline.com. to hear Life Skills Assistant Erica Nelson explain more about the program.

The department hosted a make-up seminar for several student-athletes whose schedule or class conflicts prevented them from participating in the first event. I caught up with the Life Skills department at their make-up seminar this past week, held in "the Dodie", SC's new Academic Enrichment Center. I found it interesting to be a fly on the wall as student-athletes worked on the "student" role and were able to interact with representatives from BP Barber, Coke, Spirit Telecomm, Target, BB&T, AXA Investments, Colonial Life Arena, Columbia Convention Center, and University of South Carolina Academic Services. | 3 Comments | No TrackBacks
On October 1, 2010, DISH Network dropped 19 FOX Regional Sports Networks.  This service disruption includes FOX Sports Carolinas and SportSouth.

As a result, South Carolina fans with DISH Network service will not be able to view the Gamecocks' game against Vanderbilt on Saturday.
Only DISH Network subscribers are affected.  Please contact your service provider if you have further questions.

So basically, if you're a Gamecock fan with DISH Network, make plans to watch the game out somewhere or with someone who has another service provider so you can be sure to see the game. Go Gamecocks!

• A 2009 ITA Scholar-Athlete Award recipient
By Samantha Swinehart and Katie Rose Higgins
(Edited by Wes Todd, Asst. Media Relations Director)

(EDITOR'S NOTE: The South Carolina women's golf team was afforded the opportunity to play a round of golf with Darius Rucker, lead singer for "Hootie and the Blowfish" and one of the world's biggest and most visible Gamecock fans. Director of Golf Puggy Blackmon and head coach Kalen Anderson presented Rucker with a personalized South Carolina golf bag and named him an "honorary coach," which delighted the Charleston native. In this blog, freshmen Samantha Swinehart and Katie Rose Higgins talk about their experience last Friday at Bulls Bay Golf Club in Awendaw, S.C.)

When you first think of the name Darius Rucker, what do you think of? Well, you are probably thinking of an exceptionally talented musician, the lead singer for "Hootie and the Blowfish" and also as an outstanding new country artist. Well, now when I think of the name Darius Rucker, I think of a kind, outstanding, down to earth person who is a joy to be around. This is due to the opportunity the South Carolina women's golf team was given to play with Darius at Bulls Bay on our fall break (Oct. 15).

We (Sam and Katie Rose) anticipated the day so much, we posted a written countdown of days until playing with Darius on the front door of our dorm. The countdown started with five days and eventually went down until only a 1 was posted on our front door. This was when the excitement really began and the reality of playing golf with Darius Rucker finally set in.  Finally, Thursday arrived and we headed down to Bulls Bay as our excitement and anticipation continued to grow. Rickey Sullivan, the teaching instructor from Bulls Bay, set up the date and graciously hosted dinner for the team on Thursday night before we spent the night in the cottages at Bulls Bay.

On Friday morning, we had breakfast at the clubhouse and then proceeded down the long cart path to The Ranch where Darius awaited. He was so cordial and immediately introduced himself to each one of us. Then he began to joke around with us and talk with us as if he is just a normal guy. We were so impressed with how personable Darius was. He had flown in late the night before and had to fly out right after he played with us. Yet he acted like he was so happy to play with us and made it a very enjoyable and memorable round.

He reminisced on his times as a student at South Carolina, and talked about how great it is to be a Gamecock. Throughout the round he got to know each of the players. Sam (Swinehart) and Darius became friends quickly after finding they had the same laugh. Darius immediately nicknamed Amanda (Strang) "Controlled Fury" after feeling a wind gust after she swung the golf club. He switched threesomes after the turn, and posed for pictures with the team. After the round, we headed to the clubhouse, where Katie Burnett was honored with a cake and a Happy Birthday song from Darius. It truly was a treat and an experience we will cherish. Even with numerous No. 1 hits and sold-out shows, Darius stays down to earth and an avid supporter of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Writing earlier about the Garnet and Black World Series this weekend got me to reminiscing; let's take a moment shall we?

681 people have checked in at Williams-Brice Stadium on Foursquare. Geotargeting apps are growing in popularity, will be interesting to see if it starts growing among Gamecock fans.

The Gamecocks have posted six consecutive seasons of at least a .500 record from 2004-2009. If we get to at least the .500 mark this season (don't freak out, we will), it will equal a long-standing school record of seven seasons set from 1928 to 1934.

The National Champion (still so fun to say isn't it??) South Carolina baseball team wraps up fall practice this weekend with the Garnet and Black World Series. The team will play several scrimmages this weekend broken up into two teams, the Garnet team and the Black team. Players also serve as managers for the two squads and they each got to select their own team. The Garnet squad will be managed by Steven Neff and the Black squad will be managed by Scott Wingo. You can check out the roster breakdown for both the Garnet and Black squads on GamecocksOnline.com (and perhaps decide which color you want to wear!)

The scrimmages are free and open to the public so feel free to hang out at Carolina Stadium for the afternoon. First pitch on Friday is at 3:30 PM and on both Saturday and Sunday games will start at 1:30 PM.

I'm looking forward to a great Gamecock Friday... I'll be checking out Baseball for awhile then going over to Volleyball and wrapping up the evening over at Beckham Field, watching Softball take on the NPF All-Stars. Love it!

Vanderbilt has four players listed on their roster from the state of South Carolina. Vanderbilt head coach Robbie Caldwell is also a native of the Palmetto State.

South Carolina football ranks first in the SEC in both red zone offense and defense. The Gamecocks are 21-for-23 on offense and the defense has allowed just 16 scores in 24 opportunities with eight of the 16 being field goals.

This Friday, South Carolina Softball is taking on the National Pro Fastpitch All-Stars team. The NPF All-Stars team is made up of former collegiate stars and Olympians now playing softball professionally. Star pitchers Cat Osterman and Danielle Lawrie will be playing for the NPF squad.

I'm excited a lot of youth club teams from the area are coming to watch because it's a great opportunity for them to watch some elite players in action, as well as talk and take pictures with them after the game during a post-game autograph session with the NPF team and the Gamecocks. The autograph session will start about 10 minutes after the game ends.

For more info about the team and the game you can listen to head coach Beverly Smith tomorrow night on the Carolina Calls radio show, airing live from Wild Wing Cafe in Sandhills. You can listen on 107.5 FM or GamecocksOnline.com.

This week's pick for Fans of the Week came from Friday night's soccer game. Our 14th ranked Women's Soccer team was taking on Georgia and these young ladies were having a great time hanging out with Cocky in the stands. Haleigh Ormsby (left) is 10 years old and in 5th grade. Sister Lainey Ormsby (right) is 4 years old. Both girls play recreational soccer here in Columbia and according to their parents, Rob and Louise Ormsby, love coming to South Carolina soccer games and (of course) love Cocky too!

South Carolina Swimming & Diving opened up their season this past weekend in Nashville, beating both Vanderbilt and Western Kentucky.

Rachael Schaffer.jpeg
In her first collegiate meet, freshman swimmer Rachael Schaffer swam the sixth-fastest time in school history in the 200 Breaststroke AND the 200 Individual Medley (for you non-swimming folks, that's 50 yards of each of the four strokes in one race). Rachel also finished second in the 100 Breaststroke. Her great performance this weekend earned her the AgSouth Athlete of the Week honor.

A native of Baltimore, Rachael swims for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club (if that sounds familiar, it's also where Michael Phelps trains) and already has 2012 Olympic Trial qualifying times in four events.

Congrats, Rachael. Keep it up and Go Gamecocks!

Got word from Vanderbilt that they have some tickets available for this Saturday's game vs. our Gamecocks. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM ET and the game will air on FSN. Tickets are $50 each.

I've made the trip to Vanderbilt for a football game once as a fan and really enjoyed Nashville (and a Gamecocks W!). We made a weekend trip out of it and did a lot of exploring around downtown Nashville, including going to a Titans game. It's about a seven hour drive from Columbia. Going up through the mountains in NC is a nice drive and there will be some beautiful views this time of year with the leaves changing.

For fans making the road trip in an RV, Vandy has a new parking area for RV's than in years past. The new lot is located on the corner of 21st Avenue South and Broadway, it is accessible from 21st Avenue South off of West End Avenue. For additional information call Vanderbilt Traffic & Parking: (615) 322-2554.

Cocky's 30th Birthday Weekend Celebration Wrap-Up

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Thank you to all the fans who participated in our celebration of Cocky's 30th Birthday this weekend, by singing at the games, sending in your photos, and sending your birthday wishes to the bird on Facebook and Twitter.

Cocky had a great time with the fans and getting his presents - signed balls from Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, and Volleyball - and we all loved going through all the great pictures submitted by fans. The slideshow below contains those pictures with Cocky submitted by fans as well as pictures from the festivities this weekend.

I talked to the first person to ever be "Cocky", John Routh (class of 1982), last week about the birthday celebration and it makes him very proud that now, 30 years later, Cocky has become so loved and nationally recognized. As Cocky, Routh paved the way for this, performing at Carolina's games in the 1981 College World Series after winning over the NCAA at the Regional, then returning to the 1982 College World Series as the official mascot who performed throughout the tournament. Cocky was the first mascot to ever go to the College World Series. National Championships from the UCA and NCA would follow and numerous appearances in the Capital One Bowl Mascot Challenge, including a win in 2004.

Many longtime Gamecock fans remember the first time Cocky appeared on the field as well as
Cocky_Clemson.jpg
some of the creative skits Cocky performed. Routh detailed one such skit in the 1981 game vs. Clemson. He borrowed Sarge Frye's tractor, attached a tiger tail and a "ClemPson Drivers' Ed" sign, and drove around the field, apparently running over a stuffed tiger thrown from the stands in the process.

Once again, Happy 30th Birthday to our favorite bird, Cocky!!!

A week in the busy life of Cocky

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
We all love Cocky and it's hard to imagine there were ever a time without him. Over the past 30 years since he first appeared in 1980, Cocky has become one of the most treasured parts of South Carolina Athletics and the University as a whole. Cocky is one of the most recognized and honored mascots in the nation, including winning the Capital One Bowl National Mascot of the Year in 2003, appearing in commercials, and winning several UCA and NCA National Championships.

Being such a popular bird means Cocky often has to "fly" in a lot of directions. His primary responsibilities are athletic contests where he is always a crowd favorite. Don't be shy to approach him, Cocky will never refuse a picture or an autograph! Next priority are other athletics department events or activities such as coaches' call-in shows appearances. Cocky is then on hand for Gamecock Club appearances around the state and MyCarolina Alumni Association events. Cocky often participates in other university events as well, such as recent appearances for Russell House fire safety and Carolina Dining.

While athletics and university functions get first priority at all times, Cocky is also available for outside appearances, though you often have to put in a request at least six to eight weeks in advance to get on this bird's calendar. Weddings are one of the most popular requests Cocky receives but there is a wide range as long as it meets the University's provisions (e.g. businesses have to be sponsors to request a Cocky appearance). As Cocky is always filled by a South Carolina student, who obviously has his own class responsibilities, he is a natural fit at many youth events to promote education such as Cocky's Reading Express.

Just in the coming week Cocky will be appearing at: several Gamecock athletic events (and celebrating his birthday!!); a fall festival at the children's center; Cocky's Reading Express; the Ray Tanner Foundation Walk; and a child's birthday party in Greenwood. Cocky was also on hand for an interview with WLTX about his birthday and to receive a birthday cake from Coach Spurrier on Tuesday. Whew!!!

Happy 30th Birthday to our beloved Cocky and thank you for all you do!

- Brittany Lane, Spurs Up Blog

See y'all there and Go Gamecocks!!!

As the South Carolina Women's Soccer team prepares to take on Georgia tonight, they sit in control of their own destiny for the SEC Championship. Wins last week over Alabama and Auburn put the Gamecocks at the top of the standings. While both No. 20 Georgia and No. 14 South Carolina are undefeated, the Gamecocks hold a three point lead in the standings due to fewer ties. Coach Shelley Smith said that first place or not, the team will continue to treat the season as they have been, really coming to play every game and hoping to continue winning more games than they give up.

Tonight's game vs. the Bulldogs and Sunday's match-up with Tennessee (televised live nationally on ESPNU at 3:00 PM - be there!) are crucial games in moving toward the end of the season. Get more info on this weekend's games on GamecocksOnline.com.

Fans, also remember we'll be celebrating Cocky's 30th Birthday at tonight's game so come out to Stone Stadium to wish your favorite bird a happy birthday!

A few football notes courtesy of the SEC

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
With some key match-ups this weekend (South Carolina vs. Kentucky and Auburn vs. Arkansas in particular) and the first BCS standings of the season being released this coming Sunday, there were a few interesting football tidbits from the SEC today:

-The SEC leads all conferences with 356 total appearances in the history of the BCS standings (1998).

- Since the BCS poll was expanded to 25 teams in 2004, the SEC has had no less than four teams ranked every year in the first poll of the season.  Before 2004, the SEC had no less than two teams ranked every year.

- The most SEC teams to be ranked in the first BCS poll of the season was seven in 2007 (LSU - 4; South Carolina - 6; Kentucky 7; Florida - 15; Auburn - 17; Georgia - 20; Tennessee - 21).

- Ten SEC schools have been ranked at least once in the first BCS poll of the season.  Florida has been ranked the most with 10 (of 12 total polls), followed by Georgia and LSU with eight each, Tennessee with seven, Alabama and Auburn with four each, South Carolina three times, Arkansas twice and Miss. State and Kentucky once each.

-
Through five games this season, South Carolina has been penalized only 24 times for 170 yards.  Carolina ranks first in the SEC and sixth in the nation in penalty yards per game (34.00).  Carolina also leads the nation in touchdown percentage in the red zone, hitting the end zone 17 out of 20 times (85 percent).

-
Kentucky senior tailback Derrick Locke leads the SEC and ranks seventh nationally in all-purpose yards, averaging 174.7 yards per game.  He has surpassed the 100-yard mark in either rushing or passing yards in five of six games this season.

-
After six weeks this season, SEC teams are scoring 30.9 points and averaging 394.7 yards per game.   The scoring average is tops among all seasons since conference expansion in 1992.  The yardage average is the most since 2001, when SEC teams averaged 399.2 yards per game.

- This weekend, the two biggest quarterbacks in the SEC will be competing as Arkansas (Ryan Mallett) visits Auburn (Cam Newton).  The sizes of the 12 SEC starting quarterbacks (most recently published depth chart) are listed below.  The average size of an SEC quarterback in 2010 is 6-3 2/3, 225 pounds.  By comparison, the average size of an SEC quarterback in 1980 (using pre-season depth charts) was 6-1, 190 pounds.

STARTING QUARTERBACKS IN THE SEC (TALE OF THE TAPE)

Cam Newton, Auburn                    6-6          250

Former football players at Alabama game

Several former Gamecock football players were among the almost 83,000 people who witnessed South Carolina beat Alabama on Saturday.

Currently playing just up the road for the Carolina Panthers, Eric Norwood (below, left) was on the field to accept a plaque in honor of his holding the South Carolina record for career sacks and tackles for loss. Nearby were former wide receivers Moe Brown (below, right) and Tim "Pops" Frisby. Many remember Frisby's inspiring story of returning to school after military service and walking on to the Gamecock football team as a 39 year old.

Also on hand were South Carolina's first and only Heisman Trophy winner, George Rogers, and former Gamecocks and NFL players Anthony Wright (below, left) and Arturo Freeman (below, right), who were recognized on the field during the game.

IMG_0467.JPGFormer QB Corey Jenkins mingled in the student section during the 4th quarter. Jenkins returned to Carolina after a few years spent in the NFL and out in the workforce and is now finishing his degree.

A big thank you to all the former players who came to the game (including any I may have missed!) and who continue to give back to South Carolina Athletics!

Paul Dietzel(1966-1974) will be honored next week at his alma mater, Miami University (Ohio). Miami is erecting a full-figure statue of the legendary coach in their Cradle of Coaches Plaza.

Coach Dietzel left a lasting footprint on South Carolina football. He coached the Gamecocks to a conference championship when he won the ACC title in 1969. He was also the man behind our fight song. Dietzel wrote new lyrics to the "Step to the Rear" music and thus was born "The Fighting Gamecocks Lead the Way", which officially became the fight song in 1969.

If you haven't heard, Cocky's 30th birthday is October 16th so we will celebrating with fans all week. Coach Spurrier kicked things off yesterday at his weekly press conference by presenting Cocky with a special birthday cake and the festivities will continue this weekend at home matches for Women's Soccer, Men's Soccer, and Volleyball.

At Women's Soccer on Friday (vs. conference rival Georgia @ 7:00 PM) photos submitted by fans of Cocky from over the years will play on the video board and the crowd will join together in singing Happy Birthday. There is still time to email your photos to Gamedaypics2010@gmail.com. We will include as many as possible of the best ones we receive! The photos will also be posted on the Gamecocks' Facebook page in a special birthday tribute album for Cocky with photos from all the birthday events.

The party continues on Saturday at Men's Soccer (vs. UCF @ 7:00 PM) where Cocky will receive special video messages from several South Carolina coaches and once again be serenaded by the crowd. The celebration will conclude on Sunday as the Volleyball team takes on Auburn at 1:30 PM and fans will be able to sign a birthday card to be presented to Cocky.

Cocky will receive special gifts each day from all three teams and lots of love from fans. Happy 30th Birthday to our favorite Bird!

SC vs. Alabama, an unforgettable game experience

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I'm sure a lot of fans felt the same way I did on Saturday - that the overall game experience and atmosphere for the Alabama game was one of the best we've ever had. The excitement was in the air all week as fans prepared to welcome ESPN College GameDay to Columbia and culminated with a celebration of beating the No. 1 team in the nation, a first for South Carolina football.

I spent much of the day trying to capture the game experience... College GameDay on the Horseshoe, tailgating around the stadium, the 2001 entrance, Sandstorm in the student section... it was all part of an unforgettable day and amazing atmosphere. A huge thank you to the fans for creating a great home field advantage for the Gamecocks!

Check out the slideshow below of the Alabama game experience:

The Spurs Up Blog Fans of the Week!

I've started a new feature on Spurs Up Blog, the Fan of the Week. Every Tuesday I'll post a Fan of the Week from one of the previous week's home events.

Our very first Fan of the Week goes to a great group of students I spotted at the football game vs. Alabama on Saturday. They were loud and excited and judging by their prime location I know they definitely got there early!

After a sold-out crowd for Alabama I'm hearing people think there aren't any tickets left for other games either, but there are some still available.

As of yesterday afternoon there are 3,600 tickets available for the October 30th game vs. Tennessee, including about 2,500 tickets Tennessee returned from their allotment. These have been selling quickly after the win over Alabama! Tickets are also still available for both Arkansas and Troy.

You can buy tickets for any of the last three games online here: http://www.ticketmaster.com/venueartist/114778/880198

Go Gamecocks!

Columbia, South Carolina, was the epicenter of the college football world today and the Gamecocks did not disappoint. The fans were feeling it all day. Great crowd at ESPN College GameDay this morning, lots of great tailgates, a rockin' Williams Brice filled to the brim, rally towels waving throughout the stadium, Sandstorm better than I've ever seen it... it all came together for an amazing gameday! We'll have more photos and videos up in the next couple days!

For now... GO GAMECOCKS!

A big thank you to Joalin Goff, Operations Producer for ESPN College GameDay, who spoke with Spurs Up Blog today about the logistics behind the set-up of the GameDay show. A lot of behind the scenes efforts are crucial to a successful broadcast. The weekly show travels across the country from week to week with eight trucks and anywhere from 75 to 85 people who set up a 10,000 square foot set area within a matter of hours. A lot of work has taken place in just a few days to prepare for the thousands of fans who will descend on the Horseshoe Saturday morning. Nine cameras, including a FlyCam that moves over the crowd in the Pit behind the stage, will capture all the action. Watch the full interview with Joalin below to find out more about what it takes to bring College GameDay live to you every Saturday morning:

Check out the slideshow below for behind-the-scenes shots of the GameDay production.

After you go to ESPN College GameDay, don't forget to stop by Bluff Road at Gamecock Village and Gamecock Gameday.

The two fan villages feature lots of free entertainment and are located in close proximity, just across Bluff Road from the stadium, with live music, games and a tent to watch the early games.

Palmetto Health Gamecock Village is located in the parking lot next to the Biscuit House and includes a free tailgate for all USC students.  The event is alcohol-free and students must swipe their ID card to gain entrance.  This Saturday's event will be catered by Doc's Barbecue.  Local band Modern Disruption will be playing rock tunes beginning at noon.  All fans are welcome to visit the Time Warner Viewing Tent where four HD TV's will be showing the best college football games from around the country, and those that don't head to the Horseshoe can watch ESPN Gameday there as well.

The U.S. Army will be registering USC students for a chance to win a $500 gift card from Addam's Bookstore.  Members of the Charlotte Bobcats' LadyCats dance team will be on hand, signing autographs and promoting the upcoming NBA exhibition game at Colonial Life Arena.

Visit the vendor tents and get great prizes and coupons from SportClips, Qdoba, Food Lion, AAA, Point West, Allsouth, Arthur State Bank and Little Caesars.  Fans can test their driving skills at the Coca-Cola Mini-simulator, and buy the latest Gamecock gear at Addam's mobile store. Plus, the newest electric cars and golf carts will be on display from CT&T.

Meanwhile, just down the street at Bojangle's, Gamecock Gameday will feature the Marines Chin-Up Challenge, acontest between Gamecock and Crimson Tide fans.  As well, fans can watch and listen to the Gamecock ISP Radio Network pregame show and register to win for the John Deere Taking it Back for a Tractor promotion, where a punt return for a touchdown by South Carolina can win someone a new lawn tractor.  GMC will have its newest 2011 models on display and Addam's mobile store has all the latest Gamecock merchandise for those who want to shop.

Register for a chance to win SEC Championship Game tickets at the EZ GO golf cart display, and sign up for the Great Gamecock Grades promotion from Carolina Honda.

Both locations open at 11:00 a.m. Saturday and close approximately 30 minutes before kickoff.

Thumbnail image for CarolinaBanner.jpgThe MyCarolina Alumni Association's Young Alumni Council has put together a great project to increase the visibility of the University throughout Columbia... with Garnet and Black of course. They are raising funds to place 200 banners around the downtown area declaring Columbia the Home of the Gamecocks. Find out more about the Garnet Banner Project and how you can contribute to the cause here.
With no tickets being available on sale for the public, the demand in the secondary ticket market for South Carolina vs. Alabama steadily climbed. Tickets are available on StubHub.com for anywhere from $101 each to $639 each and people are abuzz all around Columbia about tickets for the game.

We are definitely looking forward to a packed stadium on Saturday, but fans please remember that with a game like this one there is the potential for counterfeit tickets being sold. The only authorized sales outlets are the South Carolina Athletics Ticket Office and Ticketmaster. If you bought your ticket elsewhere, you can verify its authenticity at the box office in Colonial Life Arena between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
SEC Tailgate Logo.pngLeading up to SC's game vs. Alabama at 3:30 PM on CBS, fans can also watch live or come by the Fairgrounds* for CBS College Sports Network's SEC TAILGATE show (Time Warner Cable ch. 537 in Columbia). The show focuses on the excitement of the SEC, with previews of the day's match-ups, highlights, and news from games in-progress. The show will air live from 2:00 - 3:00 PM ET. Both men's basketball coach Darrin Horn and baseball coach Ray Tanner will be featured as guests on the show!!

*Will update you soon with exact location!
You remember the moments...

The past year has been one full of huge moments and "firsts" for South Carolina Athletics... why not a few more? The No. 1 college football team in the country, Alabama, full of history and tradition... SEC Game of the Week on CBS at 3:30pm... site of ESPN College GameDay on the Horseshoe, the most historic area of campus... a sold out crowd filling Williams Brice Stadium to the brim with Garnet, jumping with the sounds of 2001 and Sandstorm... you can just feel it in your bones can't you?? The moment couldn't be any better for a Gamecocks W. Beating No. 1's... It's The Garnet Way.

ESPNU College GameDay Tour also in SC on Saturday

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

In addition to the ESPN College GameDay show, ESPNU is bringing the "ESPNU College GameDay Tour" to Columbia this weekend.  The "ESPNU College GameDay Tour" features a fully customized ESPNU minibus, a live DJ, as well as a college-themed body and face painting station where students can pick their school colors each week to display their school spirit.

The ESPNU College GameDay Tour will be located near the Horseshoe, from 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM ET on Saturday, Oct. 9, prior to the game vs. Alabama.  They will have TV's airing the College GameDay telecast so you can stay tuned in while getting your face painted. Throughout the event ESPNU event staff will be distributing ESPNU giveaways to fans, including T-shirts, lanyards and koozies.

Lots of activities going on Saturday for fans! Go Gamecocks!

The official release with parking and shuttle information for Saturday is now up on GamecocksOnline.com. I've pulled out a few quick points and you can read the full release here for all the details.

Parking:
Remember that with a sold-out game AND set-up starting for the fair, parking will be extremely limited on Saturday! The biggest difference this week is that select parking areas will be opening early at 7:30 AM with the remaining lots opening as scheduled at 10:30 AM. See the full release linked above for specific lots. For those heading to ESPN College GameDay first, parking will be available in the Senate St and Pendleton St Garages free of charge.
*For those who don't mind some walking or want to mix in some exercise with their gameday, one suggestion would be to park in the Colonial Life Arena lot, walk approximately a half mile to the Horseshoe for the College GameDay show, then walk back to the arena lot and catch the shuttle down to the game!*

Shuttles:
In addition to the regular gameday shuttles, the ESPN GameDay shuttle will be helpful for fans who want to park near the stadium first and then come up to the GameDay show. Starting at 8:00 AM the ESPN GameDay shuttle will pick up near the Rocket entrance of the Fairgrounds on Rosewood Dr.

See you Saturday!! Go Gamecocks!!
We're hearing from Student Services that there is a lot of excitement for ESPN College GameDay among the SC students (shocking!). I always love to see what the students come up with and I'm sure Kirk Herbstreit's #5 Student Section in the Country won't let us down!!

On Friday, October 8th, there will be a GameDay sign-making party for students on Greene St in front of the Russell House from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Paper and paint will be provided by the university. I want to see funny and creative stuff folks, we'll be picking out some of the best signs to put up on Spurs Up Blog and the South Carolina Gamecocks Facebook page.

Also on Friday, camping out on the Horseshoe will be allowed after 5:00 PM. There will be a space designated for camping and please remember no stakes in the ground as we do our best to take care of the Horseshoe. All items and tents have to be removed from the Horseshoe by 7:00 AM.

Students can join the Official ESPN GameDay Updates for Students group on Facebook for more information.

Horseshoe History - Quick Facts

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks
Broadcasting ESPN College GameDay from the Horseshoe gives us the opportunity to showcase one of the most beautiful and historic areas on our campus and in Columbia. With such a large production, a lot of care and precautions are being taken to protect the Horseshoe, such as laying down plywood to protect the bricks.

Here are a few interesting tidbits about the Horseshoe and what makes it so special to the university. Now, go impress your friends (and ESPN!)

  • - Ten buildings on the Horseshoe are listed in the National Register for Historic Places.
  • - Rutledge College, built in 1805, was the first building on the campus. For its first four years, it housed the entire South Carolina College - classrooms, library, faculty and student housing, chapel, laboratories, etc. Rutledge weathered fire, an earthquake, and the Civil War, after which it became the site of both federal and state offices. Similar fates faced other Horseshoe buildings.
  • - The South Caroliniana Library (built in 1840) was the first free-standing college library in the country, predating those of Harvard (1841), Yale (1846), and Princeton (1873).
  • - Zeta Tau Alpha sorority donated the current wrought-iron gates of the Horseshoe in 1982.

Several Gamecock Club chapters in South Carolina have sponsored billboards congratulating the Gamecock baseball team on their 2010 National Championship. With Gamecock Club Appreciation Day at football on Saturday this is a perfect week to say THANK YOU to those Gamecock Club chapters for their support and congratulations again to Coach Tanner and the team!

Billboards are already up in the following areas:
Lexington
Myrtle Beach
Union
Dorchester
Georgetown
Calhoun
Kershaw
Barnwell

...and soon to come in these:
Lee
Edgefield
Marion
Lancaster
Rock Hill
Beaufort
Colleton
Augusta
Sumter
Pickens
Aiken

Fans be on the lookout for the billboards in your area! If you can safely (i.e. not while driving!!) snap a photo of one of the billboards, send it in on Twitter or Facebook.

I'm hearing a lot of fan excitement about ESPN College GameDay coming to Columbia this Saturday for the game vs. #1 Alabama and we are definitely hoping to see a large and pumped up Gamecock crowd out on the Horseshoe! College GameDay viewers know all about the signs, the cheerleaders, the commentators, etc. What a lot of fans don't get to see is the operations logistics behind the production of the popular national pre-game show and I'll be bringing you some of that this week on the Spurs Up Blog.

A lot of issues come into play as athletics administrators and university officials must make a lot of big decisions in a very short period of time, including where the show will be set up. ESPN College GameDay has a footprint of approximately 10,000 sq ft. The production also has significant electrical power and communications needs the location has to be able to support.

In years past when GameDay has visited we have used an area of the Fairgrounds. However this year, set-up has already begun for the SC State Fair (Oct.13th-24th) and doesn't leave a large enough space for GameDay. After a planning meeting Monday morning involving several university departments, South Carolina officials presented ESPN with a few new location options to consider in making their site decision with our top choice being the Horseshoe. After viewing the location options yesterday and considering the logistics of each, ESPN agreed and selected the Horseshoe. GameDay broadcasting from the Horseshoe is a great opportunity to showcase the most beautiful and historic part of South Carolina's campus to the rest of the nation for the first time.

Stay tuned to the Football Gameday page on GamecocksOnline.com and the Spurs Up Blog all week for information about coming out to ESPN College GameDay on Saturday morning!

We caught up with freshman soccer player Bradlee Baladez after practice yesterday for a quick Q&A. Bradlee was named the College Soccer News National Player of the Week and the C-USA Co-Offensive Player of the Week after game-winning goals vs. both Wake Forest and UAB last week. This Wednesday, the 20th-ranked men's soccer team hits the road to play No. 8 SMU, giving Bradlee, a native of Mesquite, Texas, a chance to play in front of family and friends.

Spurs Up Blog: Tell us about what brought you to South Carolina and what made you come all the way here from Texas?
Bradlee Baladez: The history of South Carolina brought me here. Coach Berson has been here a long time...the support he gets from the fans and the school, it seemed like a program that I fit real well in.

This has been a great week for you, tell us what it means to you to get some of these awards, this national recognition?
It means a lot. I wouldn't have received the awards without the support and hard work of my teammates.  We put hard work in and we're getting results.

You have a return trip to your home state of Texas this week, do you have a lot of friends and family excited about watching you play?
Yes, I have a lot of friends and family coming, really excited to see all of them back at home. It's going to be an exciting moment for me!

Thanks for talking with us, Bradlee! Go Gamecocks!

Women's Basketball opens up practice

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks
Spurs Up Blog stopped by the basketball practice facility today for a sneak peek as the Gamecock Women's Basketball team kicked off the season with their first full team practice. Junior Guard Marah Strickland described the first practice as a "smooth transition" after the work the team has put in over the summer in conditioning and individual workouts. Coach Dawn Staley also praised the team's conditioning work over the summer enabling them to have a strong first practice and perhaps summed it up best, "We want to win."

Keep an eye on the Spurs Up Blog and GamecocksOnline.com for this season's schedule to be announced in the next couple weeks!

Click on the links to check out GamecocksOnline.com post-practice video from Strickland, junior guard La'Keisha Sutton, and Coach Staley.
