Important notes concerning 2010 football parking:

On game days the Parking Office is located under the northwest ramp of Williams-Brice Stadium next to the South Carolina Athletics Ticket Office. The Parking Office will open at 1:00 PM on Thursday, September 2nd so fans may pick up parking passes or address parking problems. The Game Day Parking Office may be reached at 803-777-6446.

The row number was added to each Fairgrounds Reserved parking space this season.  For example: in the Black area, row 2 space 65 is designated as "R 2   65."  This will hopefully alleviate some of the towing that took place last season and reduce confusion for those who borrow parking spaces from friends.

Game day parking will be sold in the Fairgrounds in the back of the Green section for $30.  The only entrance for game day parking will be through Gate 6 of the Fairgrounds.

The Farmers Market will also be selling game day parking for $30.  The entrance to this lot is off of National Guard Road near the practice field - go 0.2 of a mile and turn right into the Farmers Market.

The following parking lots will close two (2) hours after the game and will be locked: Farmers Market, Fairgrounds, ETV Lot 4, and the Armory.  Please exit these lots within two hours after the game so that your vehicle is not locked in one of the facilities.

Fans may also park at Colonial Life Arena on game days and ride the shuttle to Williams-Brice Stadium for $3 roundtrip.  The shuttle begins three (3) hours before kickoff and runs until 1.5 hours after the game with limited service while the game is in progress.

Season parking passes may still be purchased in select areas of the Fairgrounds and Farmers Market by calling the South Carolina Athletics Ticket Office at 800-4SC-FANS (800-472-3267).

To assist with travel around Williams-Brice Stadium on game days, please see the accompanying maps illustrating pre-game and post-game traffic flow.

Congratulations to former South Carolina men's soccer player Spencer Lewis, who was recently named an assistant men's soccer coach at Newberry College.  Lewis, a four-year letterwinner (2005-08) at South Carolina, joins a long list of former players and staff members that make up the "Mark Berson Coaching Tree."  Berson, who enters his 33rd season at the helm of the Gamecock men's soccer program this fall, has 10 former players and staff members that are currently college coaches.  Below is a breakdown of those coaches who have either played for, or coached alongside Berson.

Doug Allison: Former player (1984-87) and assistant coach - Head Coach, Furman University (men's soccer)
Trevor Adair: Former assistant coach - Assistant Coach, Old Dominion University (men's soccer)
Charlie Arndt: Former player (1985-88) - Assistant Coach, Furman University (men's soccer)

Lewis0502.jpg
williamsbrice-jt.jpgAfter the first week of single game ticket sales, Gamecock Club members are buying tickets at a very quick pace. After only one weekend, and using the exclusive presale opportunity granted to members, Gamecock Club members purchased over 10,000 single game tickets!

If the current pace keeps up, there will be very few single game tickets to the Alabama game placed on sale to the general public.

"I think this is great," said Gamecock Club Director Patrick McFarland. "The ability to purchase tickets before the general public is not only a great benefit to our membership, but it also helps  to ensure we have as many Gamecock fans in Williams-Brice stadium as possible."

"Golf in America" to Feature Fred Wadsworth

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Fred Wadsworth, a 1984 All-American at South Carolina and a 2010 inductee into the South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, will be featured on Tuesday's episode of "Golf in America," a weekly program on The Golf Channel that highlights incredible people and how their unique stories and experiences are linked by the game of golf.

Prior to this week, Wadsworth was the last PGA Tour golfer to win a tournament after "Monday qualifying" for the event as he captured medalist honors at the 1986 Southern Open.  Tonight's show will highlight that accomplishment and provide a perspective on his life in the world of golf.

The timing for tonight's show couldn't have been more ironic - just this past weekend at the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, N.C., India native Arjun Atwal earned his first PGA Tour victory, and he did it in the same manner as Wadsworth - winning the Monday qualifier. He became only the second golfer in PGA Tour history to pull off that feat, joining Wadsworth in a very exclusive club.

Wadsworth was a second-team All-American as selected by the Golf Coaches' Association of America and an All-Metro Conference in 1984 when he led the Gamecocks to a berth in the NCAA Championship. His ninth-place finish remains the highest individual finish for a South Carolina men's golfer at an NCAA Championship.

Tonight's episode is scheduled to air at 9 p.m. ET on The Golf Channel.

Restroom Upgrades at WBS

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Good news for Gamecock fans attending football games this fall. Two restrooms at Williams-Brice Stadium have been renovated over the summer.

On the east side lower level, one men's restroom has been upgraded to replace the trough urinal with individual fixtures and screens to increase privacy and improve the overall quality of the restroom.   In addition, 14 of the urinals are waterless, reinforcing the University's sustainability goals.

On the west side Club Level, one women's restroom has been completely removed and replaced with a larger more functional layout.  The capacity has increased from four toilets and two sinks to 12 toilets and six sinks.  The renovation also includes new lighting and new tile flooring.  This restroom expansion will considerably decrease waiting times and overcrowding in this area of the stadium.

It is the Athletics Department's intent to continue restroom renovations each summer.

Coaches Support Building

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The Gamecocks Athletic staff received an e-mail message from Athletics Director Eric Hyman today that Spurs Up will pass along...

We have received some outstanding news. The Budget and Control Board has given us approval to borrow the $19 million needed for the Coaches Support Building. By the summer of 2012 we will have a new home for most of our coaches, support staff and athletics administration! This is another step toward fulfilling our Master Plan, and is another piece to the puzzle in providing the resources and facilities that will allow us to compete for championships and be a nationally prominent program. I look forward to the synergy we'll enjoy by being housed under one roof.

Derek Gruner from JHS will be the architect for the Coaches Support Building. Derek did a fabulous job designing the Dodie, and we look forward to seeing his talents at work again on this project. It will be spectacular!

Athletics Coaches Support Building: Description

The new Athletics Coaches Support Building sits on the corner of Heyward Street and South Marion Street next to the newly completed Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center - "The Dodie."  These two buildings together form the gateway into the University of South Carolina's Athletics Village.  A central courtyard with a grove of trees, pedestrian walkways and wrought-iron fences sets the stage for the village leading visitors down to various sports venues.

The Athletics Coaches Support Building is a three story, 66,000 square foot facility that consolidates several existing athletics facilities into a single home for the Athletics Department, replacing the existing "Roundhouse" and annex.  Visitors will enter the building through several main entrances along the Athletics Village Courtyard into a two story lobby space displaying the heritage of Athletics at the University of South Carolina.  This space acts as the central gathering space for the building and has direct access to the Gamecock Club which will be located on the first floor.

The main lobby is a beautifully appointed space with illustrative graphics and multi-media displays creating a unique experience for Gamecock fans.  This lobby space leads to a central elevator lobby taking visitors up to the second and third floors.  The second floor of the building is dedicated to the coaches for various sports including Equestrian, Men's and Women's Golf, Men's and Women's Soccer, Softball, Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving, Men's and Women's Tennis, Men's and Women's Track and Field, and Cheerleading.  Each sport occupies an office suite designed around a central open area displaying graphics and memorabilia.  Each suite is anchored at the ends by a multimedia conference room used to conduct team meetings or watch and analyze video.

As visitors come to the third floor of the building they are greeted by a spectacular view of the Athletics Village in the "Gamecock Gallery" and the adjacent 1,350 square foot outdoor deck.  From here "The Dodie", Stone Stadium, Williams-Brice Stadium, Beckham Field, the new Tennis facility, and other sports venues are viewed.  The third floor of the Athletics Coaches Support Building houses the offices of the Athletics Director as well as various other Athletics Administration departments.  This floor is also designed around office suites, but on this level each suite has a large open space with clerestory glass allowing for a larger volume of space and more natural light.

Facts:

3 stories
66,000 sq. ft. of interior space
Forms gateway to Athletics Village with "The Dodie"

Catching Up with Shaq Wilson

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Spurs Up recently caught up with Shaq Wilson. The junior linebacker led the Gamecocks in tackles a year ago. He is penciled in as a starter again this season, but has been hampered by a hamstring injury during the fall camp.

What is the difference between the Mike and Will linebacker positions?

With the Will linebacker spot you get to do more blitzing and you get a chance to intercept the quarterback more. In the Mike spot, you have to stay in the box more and make plays. But they are pretty similar positions.

Do you think the defense will suffer any from not having Eric Norwood?

I don't think it is going to hurt us. More people have to step and be more accountable. We are not just depending on one guy to make all the plays. All of us feel like we can step up and make plays.

Which guys on defense have stepped up their play?

Josh Dickerson and Cliff Matthews have stepped up. Those guys are going hard every day. There are also a lot of new people who are stepping up. Quin Smith is stepping it up a lot. Reggie Bowens is watching a lot of film and bringing it on the field. We have a lot of really good players.

Do you feel the need to step up and be a leader on this team?

Yeah, every day I have to come out there and show my teammates that I am ready to play. I have had to become more of a leader. I have become more vocal, and I am trying to lead by example. Just showing them that even though I am injured, I am going to all my treatments, and showing my teammates that I am doing everything that I can to help us win the SEC East.

What are your goals for this season?

Our goal is to win the SEC East, then the SEC Championship, and win our bowl. But first we have to win. I want to be a champion. In some way or fashion, I want to be a champion. I want to win, and bring Gamecock Nation a championship. So that is my goal for the year, to be a champion.

What has the strength and conditioning coach, Craig Fitzgerald, done to get the team ready for the season?

He is very positive. He gives your character a work out, your self-esteem a work out. He makes you believe in yourself. He doesn't let any of us get down on ourselves. Even though I have been injured, he still wants me to be fiery and work out hard.

When you go home to Florida, what kind of reaction do you get when you tell people, 'I am a South Carolina Gamecock.'?

There are a lot of Gamecock fans in Florida because of Coach Spurrier. So a lot of people down there notice and follow you. There is always a lot of support in Florida for the Gamecocks.

Catching Up with G.A. Mangus

Spurs Up caught up with quarterbacks coach G.A. Mangus after a recent practice at the Bluff Road Proving Grounds:

From the end of last season to now, in what area has Stephen Garcia improved the most?

Well, he seems a little more comfortable with everything. He is confident in terms of his knowledge. Of course his body looks the best it ever has physically. He also seems to be a little more comfortable accepting a leadership role, which makes me really happy. I really want to see that to grow while we are here in fall camp.

What has allowed Connor Shaw to ascend the depth chart as quickly as he has?

Well, first and foremost, it is how quickly he got into the playbook and learned. He is smart and he was well coached in high school playing for his father. The earlier you get a grasp on things, the earlier you can have success. I believe that is what you saw with him coming in a semester early. He is athletic and a very, very accurate passer. Those things showed, very early on with him.

When you are looking for when evaluating a quarterback in the recruiting process? What attributes are you looking for in a prospective player?

Intangibles. I want a smart player, who has an 'it' factor to him. That shows up in his personality. I can't define 'it', and if I could I would try to write a book on it. It is definitely there if a kid has 'it.' I want kid who has a winner's quality. When you meet kids you can't perfectly find that out, but you can get a pretty good idea if there is an 'it' quality there. Then you look for accuracy and arm strength, and all those kind of things. First and foremost though, I want a kid who has the intangibles and toughness. If they have an 'it' factor, and they're tough, they can succeed in the SEC.

How would you describe your coaching style?

I try to be as detailed orientated as possible. I try to teach as much as possible. I am not a big yeller and screamer all the time, although, I do try to coach all of my players hard.  I have high expectations, and I am sort of a perfectionist. I try to get my players to play perfect. My goal is always to try to get someone to play a perfect game.  A perfect game is hard to do, and maybe that is impossible to do. I come out with the goal every day to try to teach someone to play a perfect game, and perform perfectly. I am going to continue to try to do that, and maybe someday I can have that happen.

From a quarterback coach's perspective, what needs to happen for this to be a successful season?

Well, we have to play better offensively. You also have to have a couple bounces go you're way each season, but I am a believer that you make your own luck too. I think we have a great attitude on our team, and I believe that attitude is going to carry us a long way. The early attitude I see is wonderful. It is still early on in the process though. To truly compete for the championship we have to get our offense moving at the same pace we have been playing defensively. If we can do that, then we are going to have a heck of a chance to get there. We have to play a little bit better at the quarterback position, and a little bit better on the offensive line. We need to run the ball, and be balanced on offense. I think our defense is poised to have a big year, and from watching them out there each night, I know they are tough. If we do all those things, and we stay together as a team then who knows what will happen. Maybe we can be playing in that big game in December that I know we would all love to have happen.

Spurrier Recognizes Fink

Steve Fink CoSIDA.jpgSpurs Up Blog announced in March that the University of South Carolina won the College Sports Information Directors of America's "Best in the Nation" for its 2009 football media guide. The media guide was designed by media relations director Steve Fink with the help of assistant media relations directors Wes Todd and Emily Feeney.

At Sunday's Media Day, Coach Spurrier presented Fink with a framed award. Coach Spurrier handed Fink the microphone so he could make a speech to the media, but Fink jokingly declined to comment.

"I thought he was going to thank his teammates," Spurrier said.

For those of you keeping track - the Gamecocks finished in 1st place in the media guide contest, Clemson finished 3rd.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl Challenge charity golf tournament will be nationally telecast on ESPN-2 Saturday, Aug. 7 in a one-hour special starting at 12 p.m. ET.

The event features the nation's top coaches from the ACC and SEC partnered with former athletes and current celebrities in two-man teams competing for a scholarship purse of $400,000.

ESPN college football play-by-play announcer Rece Davis and analyst Andre Ware serve as commentators for the golf action that includes two-time defending champions Steve Spurrier and Sterling Sharpe from the University of South Carolina, current NCAA National Champion Nick Saban from Alabama, 2007 tournament winner Frank Beamer from Virginia Tech and many others.

"Many of the coaches will wear microphones to allow viewers to listen in to their conversations on the course," said Gary Stokan, Chick-fil-A Bowl president and CEO. "It really gives an inside look into these coaches' personalities and how competitive this tournament really is. It should be a very entertaining afternoon of golf."

The show will also feature exclusive interviews with the participating coaches and highlights from the long drive and putting competitions that took place prior to the golf tournament.

The nation's premier head coach and celebrity golf event was held at the beautiful Reynolds Plantation resort on Lake Oconee outside Atlanta. Over the past four years, the Chick-fil-A Bowl Challenge has provided more than $1.9 million in scholarship and charity to its participating universities.

In all, 12 teams hit the links in the featured event, all vying for the $120,000 first-place scholarship prize.

The Crimson Tide garnered 55 of the 59 first-place votes and easily outdistanced Ohio State for the top spot. The Buckeyes picked up the remaining four first-place votes.

Of course, Gamecock fans will have a chance to see the Crimson Tide up close and personal on Saturday, Oct. 9, when Nick Saban brings his squad to Williams-Brice Stadium. Carolina will also face the nation's preseason third-ranked team in Florida. The Gamecocks will travel to the Swamp on Saturday, Nov. 13 to wrap up SEC conference action.

South Carolina checks in at a tie for 34th place with Notre Dame. Each school received 38 points.

Catching Up With Blake Mitchell

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Spurs Up Blog recently caught up with former Gamecock quarterback, Blake Mitchell, at Thursday's practice at the Bluff Road practice fields.

Mitchell served as the first quarterback at Carolina under head coach Steve Spurrier from 2005-07. Mitchell is the only quarterback in Gamecock history to defeat Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida during his career.

What are you up to now?

Well, I actually just moved back to Columbia. I have been in Greenville (S.C.) for the last two years. I just took a job doing sales for Waste Industries, Inc., and started that on Monday. I am really looking forward to getting into that. It is definitely a good job and a good opportunity for me. It is definitely good to get back to Columbia, and get around some people I know.

What is your fondest memory as a Gamecock?

Whew...wow... well there are several great memories. That is a tough one, for me. I guess I would get in trouble if I didn't say beating Clemson. Beating Georgia in Athens was a big one as well. Beating Tennessee as well was a big one. It is a really tough call, but I would say beating Clemson at Clemson was huge for me.

You are the only quarterback in Gamecock history to beat Clemson, Georgia, Tennessee, and Florida over the course of your career. What does that mean to you?

It means I had a lot of help around me. It means we had some great players because we really had some talent those years.

Of those talented players, who was your favorite to play with?

Wow, I guess that would have to be Sidney Rice. He made my job a heck of a lot easier. Really easy.

What is it like coming back here to practice, and not being a player anymore?

Oh, I just like to get out here and see what they are doing. It is a little different. It can be a little tough on you. You always wish you were out here.

What do you think of all the new facilities on campus now? Such as the Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center, the new locker rooms, etc.

It is really first class. It's great. It should really help us in recruiting and in all aspects of the program.

Do you wish they had all these new facilities when you were here?

[Laughing] Yeah, it is really nice. I guess they wanted to wait till I got out of here to build the new stuff. That was probably what they were going for.

Catching Up With Culliver

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Spurs Up recently caught up with Chris Culliver following practice:

Chris Culliver has been a stalwart on the South Carolina defense since his sophomore year after moving from wide receiver to free safety. This season Culliver is on the move again, but he won't have to move too far because, according to him, cornerback is not that much different than safety.

"There isn't that much difference. At corner you have to show much more coverage ability. At safety it is like two positions in one," says Culliver. "You are worrying about the coverage, and being able to come up in the run game. At corner it is much more about focusing in on that one receiver, and not allowing him to catch the ball. "

Culliver was asked to move from his free safety to cornerback to better utilize his and Akeem Auguste's skills. The coaches believed that the team would benefit by Auguste moving to free safety, and by Culliver sliding over to cornerback. It is a move that Culliver believes personally will not only make him better, but also improve the team.

"It is a good move for me personally from safety to corner. It was more of a team thing though, and I feel like I will be more valuable to the whole team by playing corner. I think it is also good move for me because I am physical."

At the end of the 2009 season, Culliver was dealing with a nagging shoulder injury that forced him to sit out spring practice after having surgery to repair it.  With fall camp underway, Culliver says that he is ready to go.

"The shoulder isn't an issue right now," says Culliver. "It didn't really hamper me down the stretch last year. There were just a few certain things that I was supposed to do that I wasn't able to, and it started to get a little weak on me. Now I am doing the things that I need to do to keep my shoulder stronger during the course of the season."

After the first practice on Tuesday, head coach Steve Spurrier told the media how there was a much better attitude and enthusiasm among the team. This better attitude is something Culliver and his teammates had been mentioning as well.

"I feel like we have much better attitude this year. We have more chemistry, as far as everybody coming back, and everyone is bonding together," says Culliver. "Everyone is a better friend than last year, and hanging out with each other more. We just opened a new game room and everyone is playing X-Box, pool, and really competing with each other."

Since the 2009 season ended, the buzz around Columbia has been centered on 'could this be the year that the Gamecocks break through in the Eastern Division of the SEC?'  At SEC media days in Birmingham, the Gamecocks were picked to finish third only one point behind Georgia for second place.  Even with raised expectations, Culliver is taking a simpler approach.

"I think we are going to do better than we did last year. To do better than last year is the goal for any team really. Whether that is winning eight or nine games, we just want to be a better team than we were a year ago. I definitely think an eight or nine win season is possible."

SEC Gets It Done in the Classroom

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The Southeastern Conference had 15 of its student-athletes earn first-team ESPN The Magazine / CoSIDA Academic All-America status in 2009-10, more than any other Division I conference in the nation.

The Big 12 had 14 while the Big Ten and Pac-10 had 13 student-athletes each earn the honor.

The SEC had 36 total student-athletes earn either first, second or third team mention.  That total is second overall to the Big 12 Conference, which had 39.  The Big Ten was third with 34 total student-athletes earned first, second or third team mention.

The SEC had three of its student-athletes earn the Academic All-America of the Year award in their specific sports - more than any other conference.  Mississippi State softball player Chelsea Bramlett, Florida football player Tim Tebow and Tennessee track & field athlete Phoebe Wright earned Academic All-America of the Year in their sports.

To be eligible for ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.  Voting for the teams is done by the College Sports Information Directors of America.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 15,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.

The SEC's academic success of its student-athletes in 2009-10 was not just Academic All-Americans.  The league honored 2,424 of its own student-athletes who made the SEC Academic Honor Roll.  The league also honored Auburn swimmer Jordan Anderson and Tennessee track & field athlete Phoebe Wright with its McWhorter Scholar-Athletes of the Year as well as naming a scholar-athlete of the year in each of its sports.

Among honors given by the NCAA, SEC student-athletes also shined.  Three student-athletes from the SEC - Florida's Tim Tebow (football), Georgia's Courtney Kupets (gymnastics) and Alabama's Brittany Rogers (softball) were honored this past year with the Today's Top VIII Award from the NCAA.  Since 2004, the SEC has had 10 student-athletes awarded this honor, more than any other conference in the country.

The SEC also had 13 student-athletes receive NCAA Postgraduate Scholarships in 2009-10, more than any other conference in the nation.

Fans Give Their Thoughts on the Gamecocks

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
SpursUp caught up with several fans who attended Tuesday's first practice at the Bluff Road Proving Grounds and asked them their thoughts on the Gamecocks for the 2010 season:

Really, really excited about the season. I've been coming out for the practices for 29 years or so. I am very optimistic about the season this year. We have a lot of returners on offense and defense, but still concerned that we need help on the offensive line. I am really excited about this season, and feel that we will go 9-3.

-        Allan Thompson

I think we are going to have a pretty good season. We expect to go 9-3, but think we can go 10-2. We always try to come to practice once or twice a year. Really think we have a lot of good players this season. Really excited to see what Marcus Lattimore is going to look like. We were both really loved that Coach Spurrier was at the College World Series cheering on the team. When Whit Merrifield got the game winning hit, the TV cameras showed Coach smiling and celebrating. We really loved that.

-        Tom Gaherty and Russell King

I have been coming out to practices for at least the last seven years or so, going back to the Coach Holtz days. I am really excited to get to see all the defense and what they are doing. I really want to see if Marcus Lattimore looks to be ready for the season. I am very excited about the season, but I am always excited at the start of a season. I want 9 wins this season, and hoping for anything over 6.

-        Randy Dinkins

I have been coming out to practice for the last couple of years, trying to make a practice here and there. I am excited to see what progress that Stephen Garcia has made, and want to get a look at Marcus Lattimore. I think this season we will win between 9 and 10 games. We got to get that offensive line right though. Coach Elliott seems to be really fiery out there, so hopefully he can get those guys turned around.

-        Josh Hughes

I came out today to see how the offensive line looks. It really looks like all of those guys are in shape. The whole team looks to really be in shape.  I am really surprised how Byron Jerideau holds his weight well. I have been watching the defensive line in their drills. Cliff (Matthews) and Travian (Robertson) are like coaches out there with the way were motivating the other guys. Also Ace Sanders looks to be really, really fast. I have been coming out to practices for as long as I can remember. I am really excited about the season, but I am trying to temper my expectations. I really think the season hinges on what Coach Elliott can get out of the offensive line. The Georgia game is key this year. I really think that 9-3 is do-able if things fall into place.

-        Stacy Gross

I am super excited about the season. I primarily came out tonight to look at Marcus Lattimore, and see how he looks out there. I want to see if Garcia is looking sharp, and is progressing from last season. I really want to see who is starting on the offensive line and what the rotation is for those guys. I also want to see how Coach Elliott is interacting with his guys too. I was looking at the schedule today, going back and forth through it. I really think we are going to win the SEC East. I believe we are going to start the season 5-0 with wins over Alabama and Auburn. I do think we are going to have a hiccup somewhere during the season against a Kentucky or Vanderbilt, but I believe we will win the east with a 10-2 or 11-1 record. You can go ahead and mark that down. I am feeling lucky!

-        Jeston McMoore

I have really been watching the defensive line. Cliff Matthews just looks like a NFL guy right now. I have really been watching all the back ups, and seeing how they look out there. I really like the way Connor Shaw looked, and Andrew Clifford. (Stephen) Garcia took a little while to get in a rhythm, but I am not worried about him. I am really looking forward to having a good season. The Georgia game is going to be really telling early on in the season. It is a tough schedule, but I believe they can handle it. 9-3 is my prediction for the season.

Berson Remembers Mathis

Former Gamecock men's soccer standout and 11-year MLS veteran Clint Mathis announced his retirement from the sport of soccer on Tuesday.  He will join his LA Galaxy teammates for a final contest on Saturday in a friendly against Real Madrid at the Rose Bowl.  Mathis enjoyed a celebrated career that spanned five MLS teams, several years with the U.S. Men's National Team, including an appearance in the 2002 World Cup and a brief international appearance in Germany.  He concludes his MLS career with 61 goals and 52 assists.

Mathis still ranks among South Carolina's greats several years after the conclusion of his college career. He ranks third all-time in total points (121), third in career coals (53) and is the single-season leader in points (53) and goals (25). Mathis, a 2007 inductee into the University of South Carolina Athletics Hall of Fame, was a consensus first-team All-American in 1995 and a third-team selection in 1997, while he was a three-time finalist for the prestigious Hermann Trophy. Mathis helped lead the Gamecocks to the NCAA Tournament in 1994, 1995 and 1997.

South Carolina head men's soccer coach Mark Berson spoke with Spurs Up blog editor on Tuesday evening following the announcement of Mathis' retirement.  Below are Berson's thoughts on Mathis and his legacy.

Do you remember the first time that you saw Clint play during the recruiting process?  Was he that same type of player then?  - Exciting, dynamic, great playmaker?
The first time I saw Clint Mathis play was at the Rockdale County Soccer Complex in Conyers, Ga., as a youth player.  He was a skinny little kid at the time, but he was completely engrossed in the game.   Anytime there was an opportunity to play, Clint would be there.  His mom, Pat, was a real saint.  She carried him around to every opportunity to watch or play the game.  By the way, when Clint came to South Carolina he was still a skinny kid - and Pat didn't miss too many games here either!  He was always a player who wasn't afraid to hold the ball, dribble by people, take chances in the attack, and, of course, shoot.

What is your favorite memory of Clint Mathis during his time at South Carolina?
Many memories. ... Clint Mathis has been known to have a bit of a temper on the field.   One great memory was in preseason his freshman year when he rocketed a shot over the fence at the Stone Stadium.  The upperclassmen were immediately on him to go out of the field and fetch the ball.  Clint was resisting.   When reminded by the coaching staff that he did need to get on his horse and go get the ball, he muttered something like " I didn't come to South Carolina to shag balls," to which the upperclassmen responded, "Then don't hit them over!"

As a player he brought so many great moments to our fans here at South Carolina. One of the best was when we played Furman in the match that dedicated their new stadium in Greenville.  Pele was in the stands and the entire state was electric about the game.  Our team met Pele at our pre-game meal and it was truly a great moment.  Clint Mathis and Josh Wolff, however, provided the best moment of the day with only seconds remaining in the match. The game was tied with about fifteen seconds left on the clock and Furman had a corner kick.  The ball was served in and disappeared down around everyone's knees.  Then, Josh Wolff breaks out of the crowd and streaks up the field over a hundred yards to the Furman defensive box with two seconds remaining and is brought down in the box.  The referee should have given a penalty, but didn't.  Instead, he spots the ball for a free kick right on the edge of the 18-yard box.  Now there is only time for one kick (if the referee didn't call a penalty the clock should have run out).  Furman pulled everyone back into its defensive line and set up a huge wall. Clint Mathis stepped up with little to no time on the clock and bent a ball over the wall and dipped it under the bar for the winning goal.  It is still one of the best free kicks I have ever seen.  Gamecocks win, and the Clint Mathis legend adds another page to it.  Clint is a member of the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame, and is one of only two Gamecock players to make the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Clint had a very successful run professionally, what do you think he brought to the game of soccer in the United States?

I think Clint came on the scene and showed everyone that it is okay to dare to be different.  Clint's brash style and the ability to back up his swagger with great goals is something that he brought to the game at a critical time in our (the United States' pro league (MLS) development and the U.S. National Team's development.  In a way, Clint embodied the American spirit.  He was bold and brash and he made things difficult for himself sometimes with coaches, referees and probably some teammates.   But he always had a way of pulling out some great goals that no one else in his time was able to pull off.  His goal in the 2002 World Cup was taken in stride with two successive touches on the biggest stage in the world.  It was a great goal and an important one for our country at the time.   He also probably has the record for most dialogue with officials in the MLS.   It is a record that might not be broken.

Now that he has retired, we can only hope that some more young personality players are coming up through the ranks.

Something is Afoot

cocky-beak.jpgSubscribers to the State newspaper were greeted Sunday with an odd photo of Cocky's foot that spanned two pages.

The "double-truck" print is the first piece of the promotion between the State Media Group and the Gamecocks to continue to drive season ticket sales. Each day for 8 days a new piece will be inserted into the State newspaper that will ultimately build a life sized poster of Cocky.

"The State Media group approached us about the idea and we loved it," said Director of marketing Eric Nichols. "We still have inventory available for season tickets and we wanted to make sure Gamecock fans are aware of our "2001" promotion for purchasing new season tickets."

If you missed the Sunday paper yesterday, just stop by Walmart, Publix, or the State to pick up a copy.

Gamecock fans that join the Gamecock Club at the Century level and purchase season tickets have the chance to experience "2001" from the field at Williams-Brice Stadium.
