Weather permitting, the Gamecocks will open the 2010 season at Beckham Field with the Palmetto State Showdown. The tournament will feature seven of the nine South Carolina schools that play Division I softball.

Here's a look at who the Gamecocks will face over the weekend:
College of Charleston - Friday @ 5 p.m.
-Finishing with a 23-26 record last season, the Cougars were 14-9 in Southern Conference action and earned the conference's No. 2 seed in the league tournament in 2009.
-The Cougars return 13 players from last year's squad, including reigning Southern Conference Player of the Year Kristie Shifflett and SoCon first-teamer Katie Forbes. Shifflett batted a team-high .360 a year ago with 10 homeruns and 43 RBIs while Forbes hit .297 with a homerun and 20 RBIs while playing the outfield and pitching.
Furman - Saturday @ 2 p.m.
-The Paladins finished 22-29 overall and 11-12 in the Southern Conference last season and placed fifth in the league.
-Furman returns five position players and three pitchers from last year's team. Senior pitcher Lana Mackey, a preseason SoCon second-team selection, will head the pitching staff after posting a 2.64 ERA and fanning a league leading 171 batters last season.
Winthrop - Sunday @ 12 p.m.
-The Eagles posted a 26-21 record in 2009 and a 15-3 mark in Big South action, finishing in second place behind league champion Radford.
-Winthrop returns eight starters from last year's team, including three-time All-Big South selection Megan Evans and two-time Big South Conference Tournament MVP Cari Wooldridge.
Charleston Southern - Sunday @ 4 p.m.
-The Buccaneers ended the 2009 campaign with a 26-33 mark and a 7-11 record in Big South competition. CSU earned a fourth-place finish in the league, their best since 2001.
-Charleston Southern lost five starters from last year's team and will have nine newcomers on the 2010 squad.
