MBB Post-Game Blog: Freshman Growth

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
If you need a positive out of Saturday's 76-63 loss to Mississippi State on Saturday, take a look at the maturing play of the team's two freshmen - Lakeem Jackson and Ramon Galloway.

Jackson, a freshman who has started every game this season, scored in double figures (10 points) for the third straight game. The forward is averaging 12 points per game in his last three. Ramon Galloway came within one point shy of his career high, scoring 14 points in 30 minutes of play. It was the first time since the Baylor game on Jan. 2 that both players reached double figures.

"We got terrific play from our young kids tonight," said South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn. "Lakeem Jackson - 10 points, leads us in rebounding, no negatives, had two assists. Keep in mind that a lot of times Lakeem is doing that from the power forward position where he's usually giving up 4 to 5 inches and 20 to 30 pounds."

Jackson recorded a career high of 36 minutes played while Galloway played 30 minutes (1 minute shy of his career high).

"To see [Lakeem] do that and see Ramon Galloway fight and compete the way he did were real positives," said Horn. "He did some really good things and didn't bring us any negatives. That's what we're looking for as we move down the stretch."

As their 2010 campaign comes to a close, Galloway spoke about the team coming together to finish on a high note.

"We just want to finish strong," he said. "Go out strong for the seniors and then for the freshmen coming in, show them that's how we play here."

"For our guys coming back [next year], it's about continuing to fight," said Horn. "Everything we do is to move forward for the future."

Carlton Haywood - History Maker at South Carolina

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
In 1969, Carlton Haywood found his way to the University of South Carolina.  It was a monumental moment when Haywood made his way to campus, as he was the first African American to enroll at the University of South Carolina on a football scholarship.  Haywood would play on the 1969 freshman team, took a redshirt in 1970 and earned a varsity letter in 1971.  Forty years later, Haywood looks back on the time and remembers when he first became a part of the Gamecock Nation.

How did you find yourself here?

I was recruited by one of the recruiting coordinators by the name of Jackie Powers.  I guess his recruiting territory included Macon, Ga.  Of course I was on a high school team and we were ranked pretty high in the state.  We had a pretty good season.  Jackie got with the coaches and they recommended me highly.  One thing led to another.  I made a recruiting visit to Carolina in the spring of 69. I had never been away from Georgia at all and they flew me up to South Carolina on a private plane and it was a love at first sight kind of thing. Actually, I really wanted to go to Georgia Tech and Georgia and those kinds of places but at that time it was a different era.  Georgia wasn't recruiting black players and Georgia Tech, I actually never went to visit Georgia Tech because I made the trip to South Carolina I was hooked on the facilities and everything else and the way I was treated when I was up there, so I chose South Carolina.

Do you remember the feeling of being offered an athletic scholarship? That had to be a pretty big deal for you personally.

Yeah, it was a big deal.  Coach Dietzel made a big deal out of it.  Coach Dietzel's office was at the Roundhouse at that time.  It made headlines around the city (of Columbia) and state of South Carolina and also in Georgia.  It was a big deal; they made a big deal of it.  I was very impressed.  Obviously my head was bigger than it should have been and it was a great achievement at the time to even get offered a scholarship at South Carolina, so by all means it was a wonderful thrill.

How would you describe coming here, was it a whirlwind?

I recall when I came through the recruiting process that actually had the first black basketball player getting recruited at that time, Casey Manning and Jackie Brown was the first black baseball player but Jackie of course ended up playing on the football team.  Jackie passed away in '94.  They actually presented our entire recruiting trip at the half time of a Gamecock basketball game.  It was quite a thrill; we walked out on center court.  We were very well received by the basketball crowd.  It was a thrill; it was just overwhelming for a kid from Macon, Ga. at the time.

Basketball was playing pretty well at that time.

Oh yeah, we had great teams in those days, back in the day of John Roche and Tom Riker.  They were ranked highly in the country in basketball at that time. Coach McGuire was a great coach and basketball was the preeminent sport.  Football was just coming around.  Coach Dietzel was just trying to get it going.  We were trying to build our program at that time.  I thought it was a great opportunity for me and I wanted to be a part of the scene.  The actual presentation of me, Jackie Brown and Casey Manning at that basketball game was something I can still tell my grandkids about.

You were on the Freshman Team in '69. Was it special to be a part of the program that year as the varsity won an ACC championship?  What was it like to see those guys perform at the football games?

It was a thrill.  I was just glad to be a small part of it at the time.  I went through some injury problems.  I had some hamstring problems and I couldn't participate as much as I wanted to at that time, but it was still just a thrill to be a part of it at that time.

What is one thing that you'll take away from your time at South Carolina?

One thing I'd like to add that stood out to me as part of my learning experience and really helped me develop during my time there was Coach Pride Ratterree. When times got really tough I talked to Coach Ratterree.  I consider him my hero in my development at USC. A couple times I wanted to leave. He gave me great encouragement at the time and I will never forget him. He was my head coach in '69 on the freshman team.

What is a talent or power you would like to have?

I think it would be really cool if I had super sonic speed and be able to just run...as fast as a car.

What is your most treasured possession?

I would have to go with my iPod because I always use it at the gym to get me pumped while I'm working out and just when I need to relax I listen to some nice slow tunes.

Who are your three favorite artists or bands?

I love Carrie Underwood, The All-American Rejects, and Taylor Swift

What is your dream job?

That's a tough question because I have no idea what I want to do, but I think it would be really cool to work somewhere tropical and exotic. I'm in the hotel, restaurant, tourism, management business, so I think just somewhere like paradise, like Hawaii or something like that...managing or something along those lines would be cool.

What is one place you want to visit before you die?

I would love to visit Australia. I think the animals are so unique and different from what we have over here, so it would be cool to see that. It just seems really beautiful.

What is your favorite restaurant?

Mellow Mushroom is awesome. [Editor: What do you get there?] I just get pepperoni pizza; it's amazing.

SEC Football Non-Conference Glance - ESPN.com

ESPN.com's SEC blog takes a glance at the non-conference football schedules in 2010 for the league's members. Click here to read.

South Carolina is the only school that will play 3 teams that appeared in a bowl last season. Only LSU's non-conference opponents had a better winning percentage than South Carolina's last season (.640 to .607).

WBB Post-Game Blog: Distant Memory

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Once the buzzer signaled South Carolina's 65-49 loss to visiting No. 24 Georgia on Thursday night at Colonial Life Arena, head coach Dawn Staley took the microphone and addressed the crowd.

After asking the fans to honor Lauren Falohun one last time, Staley thanked the fans for their support and spoke about sticking with the Gamecocks.

"Please stick with us and times like these will be a distant memory," she said as the crowd applauded.

As Staley and the Gamecocks continue to lay the bricks of building this program, growing pains like the recent losing stretch will hopefully turn into lessons for the players.

"We'll take this and hopefully learn some things from it," said junior guard Valerie Nainima. "Hopefully, this will strengthen our bond as a team. We've just got to stay together, stay strong and keep playing hard."

"To remain disciplined, you've got to continue to do what you," said Staley. "You can't just abandon what you've been doing all season."

Few could argue that South Carolina has shown improvement since last season's 2-12 mark in the SEC. The Gamecocks have been in nearly every game they've played this season and have tripled last year's conference win total.

While losses like like Thursday's still sting, the future remains bright for the Gamecocks. South Carolina returns ten players next year from the 2009-2010 squad, including every regular starter. Perhaps times like this will be distant memories sooner rather than later.

The freshman guard tied her career-high in points with 12 against Georgia tonight. She scored 12 against North Carolina on Dec. 20. Her last double-digit scoring performance came against Mississippi State on Feb. 11.

MBB Post-Game Blog: Not Enough Magic

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Saturday had all the ingredients for another memorable upset at Colonial Life Arena.

Packed house. Gray uniforms. Gritty play from the Gamecocks. Mistakes from the opponent.

Unfortunately, that garnet magic couldn't last for the full 40 minutes.

South Carolina led the Volunteers 46-43 with 9:18 to play in the game, but suddenly went cold from the field. The Gamecocks made just one field goal (a three-pointer by Devan Downey) over the next seven minutes, allowing Tennessee to pull away for the 63-55 win.

"We came into this game knowing it'd be tough because of Tennessee's talent," said South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn. "We wanted to put ourselves in position to be there in the last five minutes to make some plays and win the game. But we had a stretch where we didn't score at all and had some turnovers that led to [Tennessee] baskets. We didn't make enough plays when we had to."

South Carolina's issues with depth and experience on the court make every play crucial when playing quality opponents like the Volunteers.

"We're not in a position where we can have those kind of lapses against this kind of team," said Horn.

The Gamecocks shot 9-for-30 (30%) in the second half and 20-for-63 (31.7%) overall.

"We took some great shots today, but just had a bunch that didn't go in," said Horn.

"It was just one of those cases where shots just weren't falling," said Downey. "Shots weren't falling, but this team is going to keep fighting. That's one thing we're not going to stop doing."

Key Quote

"We're going to keep playing. We need to move forward in a way that we understand we're building a program regardless of how games turn out. And that's going to be the case whether it's five years from now or if we were undefeated right now, that's going to continue to be the focus." - Darrin Horn

Free Flu Shots at UT-SC Game Saturday

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Fans who are planning to attend Saturday afternoon's South Carolina vs. Tennessee men's basketball game can also take steps to keep themselves healthy this spring.  South Carolina DHEC will have nurses on hand at a station on the concourse of Colonial Life Arena, giving H1N1 flu shots for free to anyone who is in attendance and is interested.

Dr. Ernie Bell, Public Health Director for Region 3 of South Carolina DHEC, says people need to be aware that the threat of H1N1 has not passed.  "Flu epidemics often occur in waves," said Bell, "and since this flu first presented in the spring it is not too late to get the vaccine as CDC has indicated that we may see another wave this spring."

DHEC will also be providing free H1N1 flu shots at the South Carolina vs. Mississippi State men's basketball game on Saturday, February 27th as well as at Carolina Stadium prior to and during the Gamecocks baseball game with Clemson on Sunday, March 7th.

Fans must have a ticket to those games to gain access to the areas where the vaccine is being made available.

Opening Day 2010 Recap

"People ask me what I do in winter when there's no baseball. I'll tell you what I do. I stare out the window and wait for spring." - Rogers Hornsby

Click here for Opening Day Photo Gallery

It may not have had the anticipation and pageantry of 2009 when the stadium opened, but Opening Day 2010 was just as exciting for the Gamecocks. The baseball gods smiled on South Carolina as the weather was perfect for late February - sunny skies and 60 degrees.

The Gamecock baseball team followed suit and provided a enjoyable 10-3 win over Duquesne for the crowd over 6,300 fans. The game featured a three home runs - including a grand slam provided by Jeffery Jones and a debut home run for freshman Christian Walker.

Former Gamecock pitcher Kip Bouknight got the day started by throwing out the first pitch. Bouknight was a key member of the 2000 SEC Champion South Carolina team when he compiled a 17-1 record and earned the Golden Spikes Award.

"Kip was a tremendous athlete and he is a tremendous person," said Tanner. "He's a great influence when he's come back and he's been an integral part of our program."

Jones opened up the 2010 account for South Carolina with a blast to right field to give South Carolina a 1-0 lead over Duquesne in the second inning.

The Dukes scratched back in the top of the third to tie the score, but Jones hit a grand slam in the bottom of third to put the Gamecocks ahead for good.

"It felt good. We've still got work to do but it was great to get a win in the first game," said Jones. "I'm just trying to do what I can to help the team out."

Freshman third baseman Christian Walker performed well in his debut with a solo shot to left center field in the sixth inning.

"[Opening Day at Carolina Stadium] was a great experience, but almost overwhelming," he said "But I was able to get settled down after the first inning started."

Staley Leads New Wave of Coaches - ESPN.com

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Check out this profile story about South Carolina women's basketball head coach Dawn Staley on ESPN.com - "Staley Leads New Wave of Coaches."

Dawn Staley was still a little steamed the day after her South Carolina women's basketball team let a big lead and a victory slip away Sunday. She definitely had not slept well. But she still maintained her sense of humor and her perspective.

Sometimes she can be a bit volcanic, when she needs to be. But she also knows there are times when that's absolutely not what is going to work.

"I have to blow my top on occasion if I feel it, but also remember to speak in their vernacular," Staley said of her players. "Because they really don't understand. If they understood, they would do differently. So you've got to take it down a few notches and put it in a way where they'll understand it.

"Sometimes, it's just experience. You've got to get through their growing pains. But I'm never going to put up with anyone disrespecting the game."

2009 Opening Day Rewind

A year ago, the Gamecocks celebrated the opening of Carolina Stadium with a 13-0 victory over the Duquesne Dukes. Starter Sam Dyson, Adam Westmoreland and Jordan Propst combined to one-hit Duquesne on the afternoon.

Darius Rucker sang the national anthem and former Gamecock head coaches Bobby Richardson and June Raines threw out the ceremonial first pitches with university president Dr. Harris Pastides.

Whit Merrifield scored the inaugural run in the bottom of the first inning and DeAngelo Mack hit the first home run in stadium history with a three-run blast in the fourth inning.

Spurs Up Has New Digs

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
It's not difficult to notice that things look a little different around here at Spurs Up. We've moved from our original location on WordPress to a platform managed by CBS College Sports. We're still moving furniture around and hanging pictures, so you might see some things change over the next few days.

There are several advantages to our new format:

1) We are now integrated into the GamecocksOnline.com page design. So if you're reading a blog post about the Gamecock softball team and want to know when their next game is, you can just scroll right up to Schedules. Pretty helpful, right?

2) Want to share with your friends on your social networking site of choice a great Q&A with your favorite Gamecock student-athlete? Just click the Share button and select your network. Easy as pie.

3) More embedded video. With this new format, we can embed video from pretty much any source that allows it. For example, a video from ESPN.com could not be embedded on the WordPress platform. Now we can bring more content to you through the blog.

What do you think of the new format?

Pink Zone Game Raises Awareness

For once, the home crowd at Colonial Life Arena was wearing something other than garnet and black.

As part of the WBCA Pink Zone initiative, South Carolina's contest on Sunday afternoon against Arkansas was a pink-out designed to raise awareness for breast cancer. Fans were encouraged to wear pink and the first 1,000 through the door received a free pink t-shirt.

WBB Post-Game Blog: Slip Away

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
After a stinging loss to Mississippi State on Thursday afternoon, the Gamecocks lost another tough one Sunday at the Colonial Life Arena.

But this one might hurt worse than the last.

Arkansas rallied from a 16-point deficit in the game's closing minutes to shock the Gamecocks 72-68.  The Razorbacks chipped away with strong interior play while South Carolina could only mange seven points in the final 8:11.

"We were up big and they just kept playing," said junior guard Valerie Nainima. "They did a great job driving to the basket and executing."

"They applied a lot more pressure and we just didn't handle it," said junior Samone Kennedy.

An inability to finish off the Razorbacks doomed the Gamecocks in the end.

"We had control of the game, but we just played not to lose," said Head Coach Dawn Staley. "Arkansas was continuing playing and fighting."

As this young team continues to grow, the Gamecocks need a player to become the leader to rally the team when faced with a scenario like Sunday's.

"We don't have a leader that understands when it's time to bear down and play and get the team together," said Staley. "It's been our struggle all season long."

Bone posted her eighth double-double of the season with 12 rebounds and 12 points. It was the 12th time this season she has pulled down double-digit boards and the sixth time in SEC play.

Key Stats
-The Gamecocks won the rebound battle, pulling down 41 boards to 32 for Arkansas. The 41 rebounds tied South Carolina's season high in SEC action.
-South Carolina made just two three-pointers, tying their SEC season low. The Gamecocks were 2-of-12 from three-point range.
-South Carolina shot 48% from the field, their best shooting percentage in their last nine games.

WBB Post-Game Blog: A Hard Lesson

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
It was another hard lesson for this young women's basketball team.

After a hard-earned road win against No. 14 Georgia, the Gamecocks stumbled at home against Mississippi State, falling 55-53 on Thursday night.

South Carolina turned the ball over 18 times (their highest total in eight games) and shot just 34.9% from the field (their lowest in their last five games).

"It was a very winnable game, but we didn't deserve to win," said South Carolina Head Coach Dawn Staley. "We lost this game with our preparation."

In a game that featured a series of mini-runs by each team, it was the Bulldogs who managed to pull away with the win.

South Carolina had an opportunity to tie the game with the final possession of regulation, but Kelsey Bone's lay-up attempt with a second to go failed to drop.

Staley had been unhappy with the team's effort in practice in the days leading up to the match-up with Mississippi State.

"It's my job to get them right and they weren't right coming into the game," she said. "Our players have a responsibility too. They have to get themselves in a position to get up and play basketball games."

An instant reaction might point to Gamecock miscues in the final minute of action as crucial, but Staley and La'Keisha Sutton said the issues were apparent throughout the contest.

"It didn't come down to those plays," Staley said. "It came down to plays where things broke down."

"Throughout the whole game, different people made different mistakes," said Sutton. "It wasn't any one mistake."

MBB Post-Game Blog: Keeping to the Script

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Playing at home? Check.

First half shooting struggles? Check.

Manageable halftime deficit? Check.

Second half surge? Check.

Win? Check.

For the fourth time at home in SEC play this season, the Gamecocks followed that script to perfection, gutting out a 77-71 win over Florida at Colonial Life Arena on Wednesday night.

South Carolina shot a forgettable 14-of-37 (38%) in the opening half, but trailed only 35-31 at the break. The Gamecocks were 0-of-9 from behind the arc.

"We were getting great looks, but they weren't going in," said South Carolina Head Coach Darrin Horn.

The Gamecocks were able to keep the Gators from getting too much of an advantage by capitalizing on Florida miscues. Florida turned the ball over 12 times in the first half while South Carolina had only three turnovers.

Leading scorer Devan Downey had just eight points in the opening period. Junior Sam Muldrow led the Gamecocks with 10 points.

"Tonight we wanted to compete and keep playing the next play regardless of how things were going," said Horn.

Senior guard Brandis Raley-Ross said the team was confident at halftime about shot selection. "It wasn't like we were taking bad shots," he said. "We knew if we kept taking good shots and moving the ball around offensively, they were going to go in."

In the second half, shots started falling for the Gamecocks while the Gators continued to turn the ball over. The surge started to build and South Carolina would take the lead for good with six and half minutes to go.

Raley-Ross credited defensive pressure (the Gamecocks would force 20 Gator turnovers) as the factor that pushed South Carolina past Florida. "Defense - we were preaching it at every huddle," he said. "We knew we could do what we wanted offensively - it was all about defense."

Raley-Ross scored 17 points in the second half, including four three-pointers. Downey got on track as well, finishing with 24 points.

"The second half effort was much better," said Horn. "We played with a lot more energy on both ends of the court. It was a terrific total team effort."

Key Box Score
Total FG-FGA 3 pt FG-FGA FT-FTA Rebs Pts Assts TO Blk Stl Min
G Brandis Raley-Ross 6-15 4-11 4-6 2 20 2 2 0 2 33
Early in the second half, Downey drove inside and kicked it out to Raley-Ross for a 3-point attempt. Raley-Ross faked and passed the ball away. His head coach was less than pleased.

"I told him at the media timeout that he leads the country in shot fakes," said Horn. "I told him if he passed up another 3, he was coming out."

The senior guard heeded the call, hitting 4-of-8 from behind the arc in the second half to score 20 points. The 20-point effort was a season-high for Raley-Ross and tied his career high.

"Brandis was huge and made some really big shots for us in the second half," said Horn.

"He told me he was going to take me out so I let it fly," said Raley-Ross. "It felt good to make them down the stretch like that."

Key Stats
  • South Carolina forced 20 Florida turnovers, a season-high for the Gators.
  • The Gamecocks scored 20 points off Gator turnovers.
  • South Carolina forced 20 or more turnovers for the ninth time this season.
  • Tonight was the first time this year that two Gamecocks have scored 20 or more points in the game.
  • Tonight was also the first time since the loss to Vanderbilt on Jan. 16 that more than two Gamecocks scored in double figures.
  • Florida struggled from the free throw line, making only 9-of-22 attempts.
Key Quote
"Devan has been so good and so special that I think the effort our entire team is putting forth...has gone a little overlooked. Our guys are continuing to fight and play to find a way to win," - Darrin Horn.

Know a Gamecock: P.J. Fulmer

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Softball season starts on Friday as the Gamecocks host College of Charleston at Beckham Field at 5 p.m. so today's Know a Gamecock features Gamecock junior catcher P.J. Fulmer. A sport and entertainment major from Blythewood, Fulmer started 30 games behind the plate last season for South Carolina.

What is a talent you would like to have?
I would love to be able to sing or dance. You always see those kids at school, like you were automatically popular if you could dance or sing...do a back flip or something like that.

Name two people you would like to hang out with.
I'd love to hang out with Pudge Rodriguez. Pudge is my favorite baseball player ever, and I don't know, maybe Eva Longoria.

What is your dream job?
My dream job is just something with sports. That's one of the only things that really just keeps me interested all the time. I'm always watching Sports Center. I mean, it would be cool to work with ESPN, but I don't want to be the media or a journalist.

What is your personal motto?
Work hard. Everyday. Like it's your last. I mean, everything in life is going to happen for a reason, you just have to work for it.

Do you have any pre-game rituals?
Before every game Audrey and I always go up to the bullpen, even if she's not pitching that game or warming up. I'll stand on the home plate with my feet on both sides, and we play...I don't even know what it's called...but it's like slap-hands, and you do it five times through. If we win, we do that again, if we don't, we change the number.

If you were stranded on a deserted island, what are three things you would have with you?
My cell phone, a bunch of food, and probably a TV; I need some sort of entertainment. If I could bring a friend instead of a TV, that might work too.

What is the last song you heard on your ipod?
Probably some Britney Spears song, I think. I think "I'm a Slave for You" is the last thing that came on; I was walking to class.

What is your greatest fear?
Heights. I cry on roller coasters.

Valerie Nainima Feature Story

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Ron Morris of The State has a great feature story on women's basketball junior guard Valerie Nainima in today's paper. Click here to read "USC's Nainima develops into star."

Now Nainima is helping lead the resurgence of the women's program at USC. She leads the team in several categories: scoring (17.7 ppg.), minutes played per game (34.7), 3-pointers (69), assists (68) and free-throw shooting (79.2 percent). She launches 3-pointers with a picture-perfect jump shot, and she is fearless in her drives to the basket. Her ball-handling skills allow her to slide into the point-guard position when needed, and her defensive prowess is as strong as anyone on the team. Beyond all that, Nainima (pronounced Nye-KNEE-muh) possesses a work ethic that has transformed her from a "little chubby girl" recruit in Fiji to potentially the best player Staley has coached. "She really is a coach's dream," Staley says.

Sunday's WBB Fan Bus Trip a Success

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The second women's basketball fan bus trip of the season brought about 50 Carolina fans to Athens to see the Gamecocks beat the No. 14 Georgia Bulldogs 52-42 on their home court on Sunday. The Gamecock faithful met at the Basketball Practice Facility and were greeted with a boxed meal from Firehouse Subs and a gift bag courtesy of South Carolina Athletics including a recyclable grocery bag, Pink Zone piggy bank, this year's media guide, a pom-pom, a women's basketball cup, and a face tattoo.

On the way to Stegeman Coliseum, everyone enjoyed their Firehouse lunch as well as cookies and fudge that a few fans brought to share with their fellow Gamecocks. During the game, the group made sure they were heard as they led the "Game - Cocks" and "U-S-C" cheer. Their efforts paid off as Carolina captured the program's first win over a top-15 team since December 13, 2005, and Coach Staley later tweeted her appreciation for the Gamecock faithful.

The excitement from the game continued on the bus, as there was a celebratory buzz on the return trip. The group watched the movie "Rudy" on the way back to Columbia, and arrived back in time for the second half of the Super Bowl. The Gamecocks look to continue their win streak this week as they host Mississippi State Thursday at 7pm and Arkansas Sunday at 3pm for the 2010 WBCA Pink Zone game.

The Gamecocks head to Athens today for the first of two contests against the Georgia Bulldogs. Game time is set for 2 p.m. at Stegeman Coliseum. Listen live on 1320 AM (in Columbia) or on GamecocksOnline.com. Brad Muller and Marcy Girton will have the call. The game is also televised on CSS.

South Carolina (12-10, 5-5) Notes
  • South Carolina's RPI is among the highest in the SEC at 32 (as of Feb. 5). Ahead of the Gamecocks are Tennessee (3), Georgia (14), Kentucky (22) and Vanderbilt (24).
  • Dawn Staley chose to use November and December as a building block for success in January by having contests against challenging teams. As a result of this, the Gamecocks' schedule is currently ranked as the eighth-toughest in the nation. Tennessee is the only team in the SEC that has faced a more strident challenge than South Carolina this season.
  • South Carolina center Kelsey Bone has proven to be among the SEC's top freshmen, leading the conference in rebounding (9.5) and ranking seventh in scoring (14.8). Bone's rebounding average ranks 39th in the nation and fourth nationally among freshmen.
  • The Gamecocks are shooting 40.9 percent from 3-point range in SEC play to lead the league.
  • South Carolina has scored in the 70s five times this season and is a perfect 5-0 in those games. Since Dawn Staley took the reins of the program, South Carolina is 10-3 in games in which it scores at least 70 points.
No. 14 Georgia (19-4, 6-4) Notes
  • The Lady Bulldogs lead the series 28-4, including victories in the last nine meetings. The last time South Carolina defeated Georgia was a 64-59 decision on Feb. 7, 2002, to close out a season sweep of the Lady Bulldogs.
  • The No. 14-ranked Georgia Lady Bulldogs look to build upon the momentum gained from a Thursday victory over No. 19 LSU. The win came after a three game losing streak.
  • Georgia's 16-0 start to begin the 2009-10 season was the Lady Bulldogs' best opening to a campaign ever.
  • Ashley Houts has played more career minutes than any other active Division I player entering 2009-10. She played 34 minutes against LSU on a sprained left ankle, and her amount of time on the court today is TBD.
  • The Lady Bulldogs fell to Auburn last weekend by 14 points. The Gamecocks swept their series with Auburn this season.

  • The Gamecocks are 10-4 when they score at least 70 points.
  • Downey's 3.0 steals per game leads the league and ranks third in the nation.

  • Wayne Chism averages a double-double in SEC play with 14.1 ppg and 10.1 rebounds per game.
  • Tennessee is 69-6 when scoring 80 or more points under Bruce Pearl.
  • Bobby Maze's 2.8 assist/turnover ratio leads the SEC and ranks ninth nationally.
  • The Vols are 16-1 when they hold their opponent to under 50 percent shooting.
  • Tennessee leads the league with a +5.4 turnover margin.

South Carolina (11-10, 4-5) Notes

  • La'Keisha Sutton, who is hitting an SEC-best 64.7 percent from behind the arc through nine SEC contests, led the Gamecocks in points against Tennessee with 19. Sutton is third on the team in scoring at 11.3 points per game, 24th best in the SEC.
  • South Carolina guard Valerie Ninima has been the Gamecocks' leading scorer 10 times this season, during which the team has a 6-4 record. She has scored in double figures in all but one game this season.
Auburn (12-10, 3-6) Notes

The Dedication of the Dodie

Student athletes, coaches, and members of the Gamecock Club gathered for the dedication ceremony for The Dodie Academic Enrichment Center today. Dodie Anderson, the donor whose generosity made the building possible with a $6 million donation, was also in attendance with her family. The center is the first building in what will become the Athletics Village and will facilitate the academic needs of student athletes.

Athletics Director Eric Hyman started the event by thanking everyone who made The Dodie possible including donors and those in charge of construction and design. University President Dr. Harris Pastides reflected on the outstanding year the university has had so far in the areas of both athletics and academics. Pastides said that The Dodie "will bring together academics and athletics very literally." The building offers student athletes large study areas, a dining facility, tutor rooms, and computer labs. Several rooms in the building will bear the names of donors who contributed to the project. Pastides said that the facility will serve as "a great recruiting tool." Football head coach Steve Spurrier mentioned that the Dodie was one of the many reasons Gamecock signee Marcus Lattimore chose South Carolina.

Women's soccer All-American and SEC Scholar-Athlete of the Year Blakely Mattern represented the student athletes at the dedication. She was extremely excited about the new building and expressed her gratitude to everyone who helped with the project, especially Dodie Anderson. Mattern said that the building would lend to an even greater student athlete community, something she has cherished during her time as a Gamecock. "I would stay [at South Carolina] forever if they would let me," said Mattern.

Men's basketball head coach Darrin Horn said that he knows Dodie Anderson loves to win. "She loves those 'W's,'" he said. When Anderson stood to speak, she was welcomed with a standing ovation. She quickly confirmed Horn's statement by stating that she would "love to see more 34-17's and 68-62's." She spoke of her hopes for the athletic community, and ended her speech with a vibrant "Go Cocks!"

The dedication came to a close with a ribbon cutting ceremony. Hyman and Pastides stood with Anderson as she cut the garnet ribbon. In the eyes of the Gamecock community, the Dodie is a big step for the athletic department and a huge win for the university.

"Downey Dazzles"

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
Feature story on Devan Downey from Travis Haney of the Charleston Post and Courier:

What Horn likes is that Downey, even at his size, can be self-sufficient when he needs to be in those crucial possessions. Meaning, many other players -- high-scoring players -- lean heavily on others around them to sustain their level of play. They need someone to pass it to them. They need someone to draw the defense. They need someone to be a second scorer. To use a baseball analogy, it's like a power hitter needing protection in the lineup to see better pitches. Downey's currently playing without a safety net, making it all the more impressive.

Feature Story on The Dodie

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
The State newspaper ran an in-depth feature story by Bob Gillespie on the new Dodie Anderson Academic Enrichment Center. Click here to read "'Dodie' new heart of USC athletics." The building will be dedicated in a ceremony on Wednesday.

For Hyman, that view is symbolic of the future of USC athletics. One can see three of the school's four most familiar athletics structures - and if The Dodie were taller than three stories, Harrison might catch a glimpse of basketball's Colonial Life Arena, too - but none of those, Hyman said, will be any more crucial than the new building. "This is the heart of the athletics department," said Hyman, who loves to use the term "beehive" to describe the traffic among athletes he expects in the 40,000-square-foot structure. "Academics and athletics at some places are separate, but they're not mutually exclusive. It's so important that we give young people the tools to be successful academically."
Click here to read an article on the primary benefactor for the facility - Dodie Anderson.

A lifelong supporter of community causes in the Upstate, Anderson is an ardent USC fan who shares seats at football games with daughter Randi Berry. When approached several years ago by Hyman about a donation, her first question was, "What does (football coach) Steve (Spurrier) want?" The Dodie is the result. "I was at the (2008) groundbreaking and had my picture made with the (SEC-champion) girls soccer team," she said. "That was fun. I just love the Gamecocks."
